This had to be one of the
best 'wheeling trips in memory. The scenery was beautiful, the weather was great, and you couldn't ask for a better mix of people to wheel with. Seriously, I would re-live this exact experience and be quite happy.
I have a few photos and perhaps even a couple video clips. I'll look unto uploading them when I can.
A few observations:
#1. The granite face where I slid sideways. Steve passed on it because it looked "too tippy" to him, and that's fine because I would never tell someone how to drive their own vehicle. But I kept looking at it and thought to myself, "it doesn't look
that bad." I chose a line which probably would have worked well in the complete absence of mud. Thanks to the moisture, my nose quickly slid to the left and threatened to wedge me in place. I decided to bail out and, perhaps to the surprise of a few onlookers, managed to climb my way out of the obstacle's left side. Kristy did a fantastic job driving over this one, and then Dillon had his own problems as Steve mentioned. Finally, Brian breezed through it
so fast that we almost booed at him--seriously, he made us all look bad.
#2: my stuck incident. Coming back down in the dark, I failed to see that one large rock. I drug the front end over it with minimal effort, but my left rear shock mount got wedged in a little "pocket" on top of the rock. Kevin tried to strap me off it, but he couldn't get enough grip in the mud. We were all impressed when Steve pulled out his magic balloon jack, and even more impressed when we saw it in action. I'm sure he helped sell at least a couple of them.
Oh, an honorable mention goes to Kristy. At one point I referred to her as AutoZone on wheels, but that is misleading since the typical AutoZone does not have as many parts and supplies on hand as she does in her Jeep. I am not kidding, and everyone who was with us knows what I'm talking about. Long story short, she is
very welcome to accompany us on our run to the Rubicon Trail (or any other Jeeping excursion, for that matter).
What a great evening. Thanks for making it happen, Steve.
