as you're heading up toward mineral basin you come to a part that you can cross the river, you cross there and continue up that trail till you get to the lake:D

Yeah, mmm-kay, mineral basin is not much harder than forest lake. Mineral basin is probably a 3-3+, while Forest Lake is about a 3. Both trails are doable with a stock 4x4 with decent clearance and a watchful eye. Okay, saying that I wouldn't take a stock ford explorer up there. basically anything with 31" tires should be able. What are you thinking about driving up there?

In fact last week my 89 year old grandma drove both trails......I just made that up.

I took my old '73 2wd chevy 3/4 pickup up to Forest Lake. We took EZ's Rodeo up there too I think. I'd take an Explorer, no problemo. Oh ya, took my stock '81 burb 1/2 ton up there, 30" tires, pulling a trailer with bbq's, tables and chairs on it.

Mineral Basin, I took a stock sammy & stock xj up there several times, and a stock yj once, back when it was harder up higher (The ROCK Wedgie, now that used to stick people good). The rock garden isn't hard if you take an easy line.

Pretty places though, Miller Hill too, also about a 3 or 3.5 (stock 4x4)

hmm, I dont' know, I think Subaru could do Forest Lake just fine. I'm not sure a subaru could do mineral basin, although I think Olly tried taking his Acura up the area where the rock garden once resided.

I personally haven't seen any cars at forest lake in a long time. However I think that there are only 2 sections that might cause any stock 4x4 any trouble.

The first section is not too long after the trail splits from the main road after the stream crossing. It can be easily bypassed by staying to the right side of the trail (trail area is wide)

The other is in the middle of the trail about half way. Its a narrow section with deep ruts either side of a large rock. The last three times I have been up there this hole keeps getting deeper. Here are some pics from 2 years ago. Jeep has 3 inch lift and 32's.

The middle rock has much deeper ruts on either side now than it does in this image.

I have been to the top of mineral basin in this jeep as well as my stock 98 TJ. I did bust both swaybar links in the 98 Mineral Basin can be as wild as you want it to be by the lines chosen.

The only time you would have a problem on the rock garden is if you are not careful when squeezing between the last two boulders. Most people I've seen get damage is when they get too close and hit the one on the right.

I have done both just fine in a stock Bronco back when my Bko was bone stock.
The only damage I had was riping off the bling bling exhaust tip that got hung up on a rock.

That last part of the RG where the two boulders meet, and you go through the middle, I watched a guy in a lifted full size blazer come down on his tranni pan and puke all his fluid. SO we called it quits and turned around before I made the same mistake.

I watched a pretty long line of toyotas go through the rock garden a couple weekends ago and saw some rocker damage occur. I guess if you are careful you could get just about anything up there.

andy,

i
i've ran both trails with a stock discovery, with no problems. but it helps to have a good spotter going through the rock garden in a stock vehicle.

forrest lake offers a few nice hikes to some epic apine views, give yourself plenty of time to hike to the ridgeline. :D

When do you want to go? i am ready to try to break something, and no out-of-state relatives with last minute repaires. :D

i am trying for saturday, what do you think? em wants to have a yard sale and i don't want to be anywhere near it. what is your schedule like? perhaps over the 24 weekend. you can bring the relatives, but if we are going to start at 10, then you have to tell them 8.
do you have a weekend off for moab yet? :D

I was up there last night on both trails. The rock garden sure is disappointing!
Forest lake has some fun spots, it getting more dug out in many places.
The only other vehicle was a XJ and 4 ATV's. We must have seen 20 deer and even a fawn.
We were coming down from the RG, getting ready to turn up to Forest Lake and there was Bambi, standing in the river. It was nice having the canyon to ourselves.

i have a family BBQ on saturday about noon. little J. still feels like crap from the tonsilectomy(?) last friday, so this weekend probably wont work for me. i will talk to lisa and see what she thinks.

as for MOAB i am thinking halloween. i will paint the jeep like a jack-o-lantern and try all weekend to smash it on the rocks. :D
