In light of some recent events (namely the anti-access letter to Gov. Huntsman in the Trib and DesNews) it has been suggested that it's time to use the weight of the off-road community to bring some pressure onto certain companies. And I couldn’t agree more.
I believe that the first portion of the list should focus on Moab. Why? Because Moab's main industry is tourism, with 4-wheeling being one of the cornerstones of that industry. If a significant number of 4-wheelers begin to boycott certain restaurants, gas stations and shops in Moab, these companies will begin to feel the pressure and will either have to change their tune or downsize and even close.
The beginnings of this list come from companies that signed the mentioned anti-access letter. They are an identifiable problem that must be dealt with. This list should not be populated with companies that people simply dislike, or that seem to be a little bit green. This list should be targeted at companies that are actively part of the problem. If they redeem themselves by showing a marked improvement in their attitudes towards access to public lands, then they will be removed from the list.
In addition, we should not only boycott these companies, we need to write a letter to each of them expressing our discontent and inform them that we will no longer be using their services. I will post a sample letter that you can use as a guide, but remember a personal letter always has more of an effect.

THE FOLLOWING MOAB COMPANIES SIGNED THE ANTI-ACCESS LETTER TO GOVERNOR HUNTSMAN. PLEASE WRITE TO INFORM THEM OF YOUR DISCONTENT AND STOP USING THEIR SERVICES.

maybe I may sound off base to you guys...

BUT,

do we ~really~ need to be pushing to open trails? I can say that I sit on both sides of this fence...

as a mtb'er, hiker and wheeler, I see both sides of the story. And I guess that my take on it is that there is a time and a place for every activity (horses, hiking, biking and driving).

And my take on it is that there are already enough trails (at least here) that have 4x4 access to them...

It IS nice when not wheelin to have a quite trail that doesn't have motorized vehicles on it. And it is nice to have trails to drive.

I personally don't believe that every trail should have access for all users... there are trails I wouldn't want to mtb, and there are trails that I wouldn't want to drive.

I guess, all I am saying is that a little balance is good....

just a thought.

but what if one day it is pushed to where 4 wheeling is not allowed? on our behalf, if it is not attended to, those people in the future will be the one's that sign another letter against offroad vehicle access.

We are not pushing to OPEN new trails, we are pushing too keep existing trails open. Yes, there are enough trails in the state that have 4x4 access, BUT we are losing more and more of said trails every year. Eventually there will be none if we do nothing. The line must been drawn in the preverbal sand sometime. It is true, balance is good, but not when it is an exclusionary balance that groups like SUWA and the Sierra Club are pushing for. When one demographic is totally excluded from accessing something that they once had access to, it no longer becomes a balance, it becomes a question of legality and bigotry.
I hate to say it Greg, but the time for sitting on the fence has passed and it's time to pick a side. Choose to continue being able to recreate the way that you want, responsibly. OR choose to exclude every one but the most physically fit elite that can hike 30 miles to see something that once was enjoyed by many.
The time to make a stand is now.

Great idea Utahxjer, let's hear a little more background info on BLACKMAGIC. I have no problem voicing my opinion to the above-mentioned businesses, but I want to know who is leading the charge and verification that the claims made are legit.

I don't know who he/she is, but I bet that they are just someone thats trying to jump on the band wagon. I wouldn't be to hard on him.

Yeah, you're probably right. At any rate I am beginning my letter writing to these businesses. Let's all get involved and at the very least make these businesses think twice about what they are endorsing.

Not a hard decision for me ... I don't go to those places anyway. But I don't think it will work.

I think most of these places want to limit the 4x4 access to try to make it so less buttheads show up in Moab. I like to jeep nice, well laid out, CLEAN trails. I like to go slow, and stay ON the trail. But many people don't do this, they think they can just go wherever they want, and throw their garbage on the ground in town or on the trail. They rip through town in non-street legal vehicles like they own the place. Those people are the problem and we should make a black list of them. Take pictures of the drivers and license plates. Turn them in. I turn into a mega b|tch when I see people doing this. So I can see why the some shop owners want to limit trail access.

But in the same token, mtn bikers and atv'rs are no saints. I also enjoy these activities also and there is nothing more disgusting then walking on a rock to take pictures of something to find a biker's poop pile. I won't bike the slick rock trail anymore because of this. Some bikers are dirty disgusting people. I mean its one thing to get back to nature, but there is this great invention called a bathroom.

When it comes right down to it until everyone (4x4, bikers, atv'rs, horse back, hikers) respects the land and uses it properly extreme measures are going to have to be taken by the government to protect the land. I'm all for permits to use the land. You have to have camping permits, why not access permits. Then if people are on the black list a permit will not be issued and if sever fines if caught on blm land without one. Have any of the associations purposed this to the governor? I’m talking legitimate associations, not clubs. Who is the official 4x4 association of Utah or National?

Not too hot on the idea of permits. Permits=fees, fees= restricted access. Not to mention the whole idea of government intrusion.

have to agree complete, though, the real key is how we act. Repsect and enjoy the land- and stay on the trails.

I know what you mean ... the gov'mt will find a way to screw up a permit for access deal ... but if they close it off all together since it is gov'mt land ... how much access will you have then?
