Moab Friends For Wheelin’ volunteers pose during the group’s first work party for its Tread Lightly Hummer Restoration for Recreation project on National Public Lands Day, Saturday, Sept. 27. The informal parking area at the Kane Creek Trailhead on Kane Creek Road is being renovated with new fencing and an enlarged information kiosk. In all, 21 volunteers spent more than 100 total hours installing new post-and-cable fences, enlarging the kiosk, repairing an existing range fence, signing routes, and cleaning up trash. Volunteers included members of Moab Friends For Wheelin’, Trail Mix, and BLM representatives. Site work is being performed by the BLM Moab Field Office. When completed this fall, the improved parking area will have approximately 600 feet of new fencing. New route maps and Tread Lightly! information will be posted on the expanded kiosk, and a new brochure will be printed that explains low-impact principles and provides route descriptions and maps.
