Moab, non-paying camping.......with shade

Most of the time when i go to Moab, I camp at BFE. Well, I am trying to find some better(more shade) camping areas closer to town. I know a lot of guys go up Kane Creek. Just not sure where. Other than BFE, I don't know of much else in the way of camping though.

The biggest concern is getting my setup into the camping area. I will be towing tandems. Setup is around 60ft in overall length. Tow rig is lifted and on 35s. Then my 20ft flat bed trailer with 4runner on it, then a 20ft pop-up trailer behind that. If I have to, I don't mind unhooking and dragging the pop up in with my 4runner either. My pop-up is lifted too and has pretty good clearance. So, any good places to try out that is a little close to town?

We're heading to Moab May 24th-30th.

Anyone have pics of good sites too?

There used to be quite a few non-pay camp areas but that changed a while ago. Even areas up Potash were altered and changed to fee based camping, but the fee isn't very large at all. I think most camp sites up on the Pritchet Canyon side are mostly private land and setup for pay to stay as well.

Another good area is over in the Behind the Rocks area (south entrance/exit), but if you going to be all the way out there, you might as well stay at AreaBFE. :D Others may chime in with good areas, that's just what I can remember so far. Anything else I can think of is further away than bfe.

Maybe I should re-phrase it. I mainly just don't want to stay at the typical private campgrounds and pay $35+ a night. I always drop cash into the box at BFE too. I just want a fairly dedicated camp site. Its myself and a buddy. Total of 7 kids, and four dogs. Not exactly "campground" conducive if you know what I mean.

Out by the entrance to prichett there is some fields that are large with lots of room. We stayed there last year. Might end up there again this year. There is shade but its limited. I don't remember having to pay.

We are heading down next week and were planning on staying about 2.5 miles down behind the rocks rd. (directly across from BFE I believe) Is there anywhere else down in that area that would be better? I don't know anything about BFE camping.. Is it free? any shade? open camping or specific sites?
Thanks!

Pretty sure we're gonna just end up at BFE again. BFE is open camping. Technically, you don't have to pay, but its encouraged to help keep the land open and it supports a great place to wheel. They have a drop box to throw a few bucks into. I always throw in a few bucks even if just wheeling for an hour or two.

Were the old airport use to be there is a runway. It is now school trust land but when we where down there for Easter lots of people camping in there. Not so sure about there being shade but a lot of open space for kids dogs to wander and no one really around to bother you or you bother them. I You take the Kens lake turn off from the main highway. Go straight until you hit a left or right and go straight into the airport area. Still not reall close to town but a lot closer than Area BFE and Behind the rocks.

It is here.

Does anybody know if you can camp on the shores of Ken's lake. I know there is a BLM campground adjacent to the lake, but it seems there are plenty of roads and space right next to the lake.
