It is a scary trail along the edge, but I never heard of anyone rolling off before this. Tragic. Hope the cause of the accident comes out - the article speculates mechanical issue

we were trying to figure it out; after piecing things together on Google Street View with a pic from the KSL article, it looks like they simply got too close to the edge and dropped a tire.

Sounds like a terrible accident. I'd be curious to hear exactly that happened, people that witnessed the accident said it was a mechanical failure. If the brakes failed or throttle stuck at the Devils Crack, you have little time to react.

Looks like a well built early CJ on Tons and H1 wheels?

Yikes. Not a ride I'd want to take. I wonder where they went off...if it was Devil's Crack or lower down. Even with a cage that doesn't fail, that's a long fall and not sure how one would survive. Sad to see.
There's one picture my wife found that shows the location of the Jeep and the trail above. It looks like they rolled off right at Devil's Crack. Pretty crazy.

Anyone else trying to figure out what the mechanical issue might be? I know I have been, just to avoid the same situation.

My possibilities include:
1- Driveline failure that took out the brake lines...? (pretty unlikely because you would have to lose both drivelines...)

2- Tranny or t-case failure? would explain the pop and the rolling back but not sure why the brakes didn't stop them...

Any other ideas?

Just hoping to learn from a tragedy.

I was thinking the same...but maybe the tcase popped out of gear just as they were in the act of climbing in, so they weren't in position to get to the brakes quick enough? And were also not belted in yet for the same reason....

UNSTUCK

But stuck more often.
My thought was they got in and he simply pressed the clutch pedal. If the transmission was holding the jeep in place on an incline it would pop as the bind was removed. Then he didn't realize he was rolling back, or panicked and maybe missed the brake pedal. Who knows?
