Montana Camping?

Anyone really familiar with Montana? Friday we're headed to Grand Teton, and Tuesday we'll be in Glacier. Is there anything neat about halfway between Grand Teton and Glacier? Somewhere near Butte maybe? I'd be up for anything scenic, historical, or unique. We'll be towing a 25' travel trailer, so nothing too rough. Just looking to spend part of a day and one night.

Its probably too far out of the way for your route, but the Beartooth Highway from Cooke City to Red Lodge is an amazing area. Lots of fun stuff to do around there.

Sounds like a fun trip I'll be a few days behind you from the looks of it. I really like Missoula, Lakeside and Kalispell and there is plenty of camping in the area but have no desire to ever see Butte again--reminded me of Rock Springs :ugh: :hickey:

x2 on not camping near butte

I grew up in missoula, and spent more time up near flathead than around butte. My first choice would definitely be Seeley lake for scenery and recreation. Deer lodge is also nice and has a few historic sites.

Unless they have recently changed things. you can't pull a trailer up over the beartooth. still worth dropping the trailer and driving it though.

Butte sucks, but not far from there is Phillipsburg. Neat little town. I would go there. Frequently the Montana 4x4 assoc. holds their divide ride there.

We're camping at Fish Creek campground at the Southwest corner of the park. We're planning on Going to the Sun Road and Waterton, but I'm not sure what else yet. We'll be there 5ish days.

That's a cool area. Up around Flathead there is a lake and a little town called Hungry Horse. Super cool.

Hungry Horse is definatley a little town. I hear some of the best fly fishing around is on the South Fork of the Flathead river that Hungry Horse resevoir creates.

Ive got a cabin on Trail creek on the west border of Glacier park, just a few miles from the entrance into the park. Wish the drive up there was quicker and didnt suck. I'd like to spend more time there. Actually headed up there over the 24th holiday with friends for a motorcycle trip through Glacier and up into Canada.

Oh dang! Nice! :chris:

A bike ride through Glacier would be awesome. Last time I was up there I saw a group of Ducati's and BMW sport bikes--looked like a blast.

Well, the first part of the trip was nice. We stayed in Grand Teton Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The drive through Yellowstone today sucked. We were stopped by construction over 30 minutes twice. We were delayed by slow drivers a bunch too. At least we were able to spot a wolf and a couple bears. So we didn't roll through Bozeman until 7ish, and came very close to spending the night in the Walmart parking lot. :ugh:

After eating dinner we decided to head a little further and found a little campground outside Townsend, just South of Canyon Ferry Lake. Tons of mosquitos, but at least it's free.

Thanks for all the suggestions, too bad we couldn't get through Yellowstone fast enough to take advantage of any of them. Glacier tomorrow.

My brother also said the construction was absolutely miserable... Guess I'll see in two days :ugh:

Post some pics of Glacier! That place is incredible  I like the hike to Avalanche lake you should check it out if you have time.

Oh its a blast, we're doing Glacier, then across the border into Waterton park, over into BC, up to Banff National Park, over to Calgary, and then down.

This will be the second time me and a buddy are doing Glacier. The first time we got about to the top of Going to the Sun Road and saw 2 chics pulled over taking pictures, so naturally we pulled over and pretended to do the same thing, got to talking to them and one of which ended up being Evel Knievels granddaughter. Ended up going camping with them that night. Shes the blonde on the left.

To bad I was already up in Montana and could have suggested jumping over the I-15 towards Wisdom or from Dillion up through Wise River through Anaconda into Georgetown lake areas. The Big Hole river is flowing strong through the area with the snow melt going on.
the 3rd to the 6th we had morning temps in the mid 30's so warm clothes would be good.
Yes the mosquitoes are bad currently we had a can of deep woods off in each door pocket, step out of truck and apply quickly.

If you're going through Yellowstone, expect delays. Construction at the South entrance (from Grand Teton) delayed us at least half an hour (of actual time stopped on the road) and the road between Madison and Norris is under major reconstruction, and we were stopped there at least 30 minutes too. You'd be better off going in and out through West Yellowstone.

We got to Fish Creek campground in Glacier today. It's awesome! Probably will hit going-to-the-sun tomorrow.

That sounds awesome! We're planning on Banff next year, probably will take two weeks to to it. How long are you taking for your trip?
