Watch yourself...if the Indian cops catch you screwing around they will throw you off and ban your ass. Indian land is sovereign land and what they say goes. And don't even get me started on the BIA guys...federal bureau of Indian affairs....those guys are Nazis!

Some idiot Company man brought his polaris quad onto a location on indian land...the indian cop backed up tailgate to tailgate and confiscated his quad. To add insult to injury they wrote a complaint to the oil company and the company man got canned. Tread lightly.

We all have permits to be on indian land...on the permit it says no quads, snow machines, motorcycles, guns, alcohol...etc....subject to confiscation and in some cases prosecution. He had not ridden it around.

He signed his permit which gave them the right to take it. He appealed to the tribal court and they shut him down. An expensive life altering lesson learned. On Indian land you are in a different country.

Technically, they aren't allowed on any of the rigs... at all. Well, BP rigs anyway.. not sure about Questar...

I haven't left the dirt roads... and no one at all has been by that I've heard of. I did hear someone got a $10k fine at Flat Rock for jogging though.

There should be no Indian land, at least as far as sovereign nations. It is an almost unique situation among the histories of the conquered peoples of the world. I'm not against certain protections for.. historical areas necessarily, but it seems to my Eastern mind that a majority of Indian nations abuse their sovereignty. The Navajo come to mind as an exception, though they have other issues not germane to my line of thinking here. :D

But yeah, I'm definitely on the lookout out there and on my best behavior. :D

edit: oops, Spence beat me to it re: permits and quads

I have met two Indian officers...one that was just checking in on a rig and one that pulled me over. The one that pulled me over was hella cool because I had my paperwork in order and I was honest with him. The speed limit on indian dirt roads is 35mph and I was doing 50 out in the middle of nowhere but he was cool, friendly, and let me off. The other guy that was doing a rig inspection treated everyone like punks including the company man who made more in one day than that poor cop did in a month. We kept our mouths shut until he hit the road but that guy definitely had a chip on his shoulder.

It seems they enforce their laws quite selectively but when they do, you better have on your best manners and have in a breath mint or you are going to have a bad day. I met a girl that cut my hair a few times that grew up out here. She said she had been arrested by the indians more times than she can remember. They would ride their horses near indian land on borders that are not always clearly marked. If you strayed too far in they would pounce. She said the sheriff in town would come spring them and their horses and send em home every time but it was still a pain.

For us it means our jobs if we get popped for doing something silly. I save my shenanigans for the BLM land thank you!

Here is the easy way to tell...If you are coming down highway 88 then down past pelican lake you don't get on indian land until you cross the bridge to the east of Ouray. The Indian land is on the other side of the bridge from Ouray ironically enough. If you are coming down Glenn Bench going west you cross a cattle guard with lots of signs and fences extending from either side. From highway 45 indian land is about 10-12 miles in.
