Motorcycle Crew: What jacket do you wear?

Looking at getting some kind of jacket for riding. Would like to get one with some sort of armor. I would prefer a leather with armor, but they seem to be much more money. I really like the breathability in certain Cordura type jackets. So I thought I'd check out what you all wear, if anything, to help you slide along in the ufortunate event you should turf it.

HRC Rider collection.

It's ventable, adjustable in nearly every way, has a removeable liner with sleeves and it's backed by the Honda name. It's made by Intersport.

They're a little bit on the higher priced side but I think they're worth it.

Another brand that I like that's pretty cheap is Rocket. You can get a jacket from them for just over $100.

Jacket

I have a Joe Rocket jacket and it's ok. I paid about $130 for it. It doesn't do much for wind protection but it's nice in the summer.

I've been hit before (car turned into me) and I slid down the road. At the time I was wearing a BMW jacket similar to this one...

If I remember, it was made of of cordura. It cost somewhere around $275 but it saved me from road rash so it was a good investment.

Like most, I believe the best jacket is the kind that will prevent injury. So then, leather with armor is the way to go, including leather pants, boots, gloves, etc. Try Dainese leathers. Their expensive but you can sometimes find deals on ebay. My friend crashed on his R6 while wearing full Dainese leathers (with armor) and he came out without a scratch.

But if you are like most everyone else, you can't drop $1000 on all that.

Personally, I prefer this...

Now that I look back at my post, I probably didn't help you at all! :p

With riding jackets, it seems to be like most things in life. You can spend anywhere from next to nothing, to way more that you could possibly afford. But then to put a price on my life is a very difficult thing. I think I would like to survive a crash if I were in one. On the other hand, the wife thinks a $30 windbreaker is sufficient (because I already have one). Hard to justify to her that I need a "special" jacket for riding a motorcycle. Let alone wanting to spend $300-$400 on one I really like. If I were a rich man, I would get this one:

The one in the pic is an Arlen Ness jacket, $400. I haven't looked much yet, but I imagine others have similar versions for probably less $$.

Helmet

The next question is how much is too much for a helmet? I've seen $100 helmets at Auto Zone. I've also seen carbon fiber helmets for around $800. I was wearing a $600 brain bucket when I hit the ground and although people who know me would disagree, it spared me some brain damage :p

I would guess it depends on what kind of helmet you are wearing. I personally wear a skid lid, because I like that open feeling. Yes, I know it's not the safest choice, and the more I ride the more I start to rethink my choice. But as far as full face helmets go, I would purchase a helmet that is Snell compliant. Their safety system is a step above and beyond the requirements for a helmet to be DOT approved.

For me, it all would boil down to the impact absorbancy of the helmet. I know the BMW motorcycle dealership on Redwood Road in North Salt Lake has a few things to say about helmets. My friends dad works there and they have a few balls made out of different materials which helmets are made out of. They do a simple test and drop each ball from about 6' onto the concrete. Some bounce, but the good ones don't. They absorb all the energy from the impact. That's what I would want. A good helmet that will absorb the impact. I don't recall off the top of my head what those materials are, but they would probably be worth the money if you ever got in a major accident. It is also said by most motorcycle helmet manufacturers that you should replace your helmet avery 5 years or so. That may have an influence on how much you want to spend, should you choose to replace it that often.

What do you ride? I'd like to get a group together for a weekend ride one of these days.

I have a First Gear jacket. I love it, it has a removable liner so I can wear it in the summer, but I can still wear it sleddin too! Tons of breathability, not a ton of adjustability, but it does have some armor. It is the cordura material, and the armor is that foam type stuff and is covered with leather. Very comfortable and it sort of help support you too... I think retail is around $300? Don't know really cuz my friend got too fat and gave it to me. But I would highly recommend them!

I like tho open feeling of a skid lid too but then again I don't like the sting that comes from a bug at 70, even worse is the sting of a rock at like 40. So I wear a full face. I also like to think my face is less likely to get torn up if I get in an accident.

Yeah, I am definitely starting to dislike bugs. I hit something, or rather it hit me, the other day and it left a good quarter sized welt on my cheek for 2 days!

Really? I'm checking all over the internet but I can't find anything about it. Is it a dual purpose bike?

Actually, the company that assembles the Yamaha Virago 250 bought the rights to make the same bike under their own name. It is almost identical, except for a few minor parts like turn signals, etc.

2005 Yamaha Virago 250 = $3700
2005 QianJiang Defiant = $2000

Definitely nothing to brag about, but it's kind of fun, even though it's only 250cc. Very lightweight and nimble. I wouldn't mind if it had a little more power, but it's all I could afford now. Prolly buy something bigger in a few years. Plus, 80 MPG! :D :D

Sounds like a fun ride. I've been there in a car once, would be a blast on a bike. WHen you plan it, give me plenty of notice. The wife seems to get pissed when I make plans on short notice. If I give her more notice, it;s more likely I will be able to go.
