mountain yoat's latest adventure: werock (4runner rebuild)

Me and jason (sami) have decided to take advantage of werock coming to play in our back yard, and compete at the larry miller werock event july 30th. Our biggest problem is lack of rig, we prettymuch destroyed my 4runner at the last bor desert race, the mountain yoats truggy(we used this at the old school rock crawl) won't hold a candle in the pro mods class, and my buggy is about 40k away from being done... So we are brought back to the old trusty 4runner :D
Here's how it sat at the begining of the night, both axles have been loaned out to other rigs

This is the break in my frame I need to fix... Believe it or not, this wasn't what made me and jason quit the race.. And this isn't the first time I've broken my frame in half, new spot though!

I pulled the motor out so I can access the frame better.

Btw we will be competing in stock modified

I've read the rules over and over the only thing I think I need is a kill switch, I have have one, I just need to put it in. Also I need to come by and get some plates made to box my frame :D

We rock is only a month away and my entire drive train is pulled, but I got some motivation yesterday while watching the lucas guys basically reabuilding entire trucks inbetween races! I figure I have plenty of time:D

As you can see I got the fram cleaned up and popped back into place, I'm going to make a run to ben hanks racing tomorrow and have some braces cut out

I managed to extract the broken motormount bolts

Wow! You guys have some drive. I look at that truck as scrap and at best a house for stray cats. I'm impressed with the ability you have to wrap your brain around a project and not get exhausted!

It looks like your shock hoop ripped out of the frame by the two holes in your picture.

I'm suprised you've had any issuses after that last drive down that dirt road. LOL What a show you guys put on for us all. Keep up the good work.

I've gotten a little farther but I haven't updated this, so here we go.
After getting the frame in place I welded all the way around where it had cracked(except the gaping holes where the shocks ripped out)

I went to ben hanks racing and had them cut out the plates to brace the frame. They did an awesome job and it worked out really nice, I plated all around the crack.

Here's a shot with the shock towers rewelded in place

I got the motor back in. Today/yesterday I got it all wired back up and everything hooked up and I rebuilt the front clip(it was a little tweaked from the frame collapsing) ill post up more recent/better pics of that tomorrow

Tyler at crawler ready has been awesome and hooked us up with a ton of cool parts that we really needed, he got us this sweet tcase mount to hopefully keep the tranny movement to a minimum
utf-8BSU1HMDAzMTAtMjAxMDA3MTItMTI0N.jpg

We also picked up a set of leaf springs and a twin shifter kit for the rear tcase from C.R. With the dual cases, this gives us the added awesomeness of double low range 2wd.

We still have a lot to do but with the major headaches done(motor, tranny, tcase) we can focus on the 1000 little things that need to be done

I about screamed one night, while going through the rules and saw that my seats had to be tied into the roll cage! So out came the seats and I fabbed up a sub floor that ended up pretty cool, also it worked out because I've been wanting to move the seat further forward to accommodate my midgit legs

utf-8BSU1HMDAzMzMtMjAxMDA3MTYtMjA1M.jpg

I mounted a window net to the tube doors with a pin and rod set up for a quick release
utf-8BSU1HMDAzMjUtMjAxMDA3MTUtMDExN.jpg

The front and rear axles are mounted and the only thing left for them is to mount the shocks(I need to buy shocks if anyone knows of a good hook up?), and pick up a pitman arm from my buddys house
utf-8BSU1HMDAzMjYtMjAxMDA3MTUtMTk0M.jpg

I still need to make a new front bumper, brace the roll cage around the halo, make new rock sliders that are closer to the body, shocks, battery, install a winch, and of course, give it a fresh new ice cream paint job

I've been busy trying to wrap things up and I haven't updated for a bit:
I've noticed from the delta crawls that approach angle is a key factor. I've seen tons of people, including myself, get stuck when their front bumper dives into a rock, especially going down a vert. With that in mind I started building a new bumper.

The finished product
utf-8BSU1HMDAzNTktMjAxMDA3MjQtMTkwNy5qcGc.jpg

For years I've gotten caught on my rock sliders that stick out 5 inches on each side, they were sort of nice when it was my daily driver, they helped girls get in, and even lately, they help jason get in at the desert races :D, but they must go!
Before
utf-8BSU1HMDAzMzctMjAxMDA3MjAtMDAxMi5qcGc.jpg

After
utf-8BSU1HMDAzNDgtMjAxMDA3MjItMDIxNS5qcGc.jpg

I relocated the battery to the back using a sweet action battery holder that I got from BEN HANKS RACING, the last desert race was a deciding factor that the factory spot for a battery does not hold up to severe abuse
utf-8BSU1HMDAzNTAtMjAxMDA3MjItMDIxNy5qcGc.jpg

After putting all the fluids in and tires on, I fired it up and took it for a spin, it drove real tight, felt good and purred like a zombie kitten, now for a nice ice cream paint job!
