Just moved to Utah, and took my jeep in for its safety inspection, and they tell me because it is lifted I have to have mud flaps. Now I've been driving around here for a couple of months and i see lots and lots of lifted jeeps without mud flaps.... So whats the deal, do you all put them on and then take them off??? Does the rule not apply to some jeeps?

I believe the law reads something like if you have modified the height of the vehicle then mudflaps need to cover half the tire.

As for putting them on and taking them off that's something to be decided between you and the officer that pulls you over... ;)

I have quick release mud flaps. They weren't that hard to make. If you ever get to the Brigham area, I could walk you through it. I still have all the stuff to make more :D.

some counties are stricter than others. provo definitely sucks because they ticketed me. i drove it for 1 year flatfendered with 35's sticking out 10" with my georgia plates. then right when i license it in utah (and those temporary mods removed) i got pulled over. then i got pulled over again. and again. and it's only been 2 months!

Either find a shop that'll look the other way or make some quick disconnects.

Brad, you've been pulled over three times? Shouldn't have registered it here... You ever find someone to lend you garage space and help you make your junk?

thats funny, we just found out that because our jeep is a 2004 we didnt even need to get it inspected :). I love knowing the law!

I was just rejected because the wire tied flaps that I put on did not cover the wheel entirely. yeah how pissed was I. so i solved the problem by taking the flaps that I bought at the former Mepco, and reinforced the tops with thin pieces of flat metal stock bought at Lowe’s. I then bolted those strips to the flaps to support the flaps sticking out in the wind. I attached the flaps to my rear bumper by welding stainless bolts to the bumper. I can then attach my flap setup to the bumper with wing nuts. It is a trick solution to a problem that I know we all face. Very cheap set up!

Here is what I did.... kinda ugly on the road.... But they keep 5.0 off my butt. :D That and they take all of about 4 seconds to pull off for the trail.

Speaking with a friend who is a UHP, he said the flaps are only needed to cover the portion of the tire that extends past the width of the vehicle...so you may not need them. It is a good excuse to buy those extended fender flares....

Mepco Sells A Kit, There Actually For Semi's. They Come With Mud Flaps, And The Quick Disconnect Brackets. The Main Bar Is A Little Long, So You Have To Cut Them Down, But They Work Great. You Just Pull A Pin And There Off.
