My other Love....Fly Fishing

We really live in a great state with all of the diverse activities we have at our back door.

I have always loved the outdoors and that is how I got into wheeling with my family. I love to hunt, and I liked to fish but it was not my favorite activity.

This spring I took a Fly Fishing class. At first I was really skeptical about Fly Fishing. I thought it was for yuppies and tree huggers. I just wanted to say that is not what makes Fly Fishing. I really love it. I get outdoors more often to go Fly Fishing. I love the rivers. Before I always looked at the rivers as beautiful but now I really love to look and study the rivers and try to understand where the fish are.

If you Fly Fish tell us where you have had good success. You do not have to tell your secret hole or favorite location. Just general vicinity or the river, lake or pond you like to fish.

I have fished the Weber River, Upper, Middle, and Lower Provo River, Strawberry Lake and River, and Diamond Fork River. I have to say that my favorite is the Middle Provo or Diamond Fork.

I am a newbie at Fly Fishing but I really love it. I am posting some pictures of Fish I have caught on my Fly Rod. I also attached a couple of pictures of the Sage Fly Rod I built.

So lets hear it if you like to Fly Fish or jus Spin Fish.

Sorry for the crappy pictures they are from my camera phone. I need to purchase a cheep digital camera for fishing. That way if I drop it in the water it does not matter.

I used to fly fish a lot on the Odgen. I lived in Ogden Canyon. The Yellowstone and the Madisen are a must do for you buddy as well as Henry's Lake. It's fly fishing heaven up there. The Green below Flaming Gorge is also a great spot.

I Love fly fishing however I dont do much of it around here, my family has a cabin in Island Park and do alot of it up there, fish the madison, yellowstone, firehole, Rail road ranch, henrys, galatin, hebgen, cliff and wade lakes, and the list can go on because there are soooo many places to fish upnorth, been doing it since i was around 8 or 9, I like river fishing more than lake but the only pics I have are lake pics so here are a few from henrys lake and hebgen...

I LOVE fly fishing as well. Floating the Snake River in a drift boat has to be one of the best experiences of my life!

I usually hit the river up Ogden canyon since its close. I love going to the Provo as well. I probably fish the most in the Uintah mountains tho. We have a cabin up there. The fish are small but you catch a lot.

I wish I had time to go more often

I used to go fly fishing on the Green below the Gorge with my Grandpa all the time. We took a guide on a Hyde boat down the stretch past little hole and man it was fun. We caught some huge fish.
But I don't fly fish anymore I found out it was to hard to hold a beer and fly fish at the same time
My favorite type of fishing is up in the Uintahs on the East Fork of the Bear. We get way up in there away from any campgrounds and we have a hayday with them. Backpack full of warm beer:-\ and a few dozen worms makes for a great day fishing.

Thanks for sharing some new spots I need to try. I love the pictures. I got a float tube last month and that was a blast out on strawberry lake. I do like the rivers better than the lakes but I just love getting out.

This is one of my loves as well. I have access to private land right in the middle of the middle Provo. My favorite rivers are the Beaver Head, Red Rock and Madison rivers in Montana. New Mexico, it has to be the San Juan. Lets go.

X2 on the green below Flaming Gorge. I have the Provo less than 5 minutes from my house and I have fished it 4 times this year, depressing I know. It is a very diverse river and love it's size. Life is too fast paced now for hours on the river.

My favorite hatch has always been the caddis and on the right days you can do the PMD's in the middle of the day and stick around, cause at sunset caddis' start, you can even set the hook just by sound cause it is too dark to see.

I will always love small stream fishing, deep cut uintah rivers, Huntington river, Hobble Creek, and even AF canyon.

Uintah rivers between lakes are a blast. Has anyone fished the stream near Murdock basin located in a large meadow(meaning 5 football fields big)? It has a meandering stream that is about 3 feet wide and 3 feet deep, with about 15 fish every 20 feet. They are small but they fight for your fly!

Fly fishing is great. One of my favorite things to do! I'm self taught, been doing it for close to 7 years. I go up Big cottonwood canyon a lot. Fish are not very big but it's close and is time well spent. I've actually fished the creek one week before thanksgiving in the past. Had the best chance at a nice brown. But I missed when I went to set the hook:-\. Another great place is dry fork trail. Some nice cutts and grayling up there at Round lake.

I wanted to bump this thread up. I have intended to get out the last two weekends around the SLC area, but I called everyone on my fishing list with no one wanting to get out. I have been fly fishing for 10+ years but I am far from pro mostly big river deep nymph fishing. I'd really like to get into the dry fly scene.

I just moved back to the SLC area after living up in Logan for a while. I loved fishing the Logan river although I saw mixed success. I am hoping to find more people to go out fishing with and/or more places to go close to the SLC area. I have fished the middle provo before but didn't care for the crowd. I know great fishing spots are sensitive, but anyone care to share any less crowded spots I could hit?

I only bait fish right now, but grew up stream fishing back east and can work a rod and reel better than most, caught the last 30 or so trout on the same hook. Planning to hit a few spots over the next few weeks while the Kokanee are running. I actually reported a Kokanee sighting last month where there aren't supposed to be any of them in that area, it was cool though to see it swimming about 4 feet away, impossible to mistake them for any other fish with such color contrast and ugly mouth.

Here are a few I caught on recent trips, Tiger Trout are my new favorite. Nothing like fresh trout for lunch when camping.

I'd be happy to get together as well. I'm just in Draper around the bend from yah. I've even got another rod around I think if you haven't picked one up yet. One great way to practice casting is to tie some yarn on the end of the tippet and go to a park and cast.

You may already know this but when the salmon are all red they are getting ready to die, and unless you catch them outside of spawning season, they can be a little bit mushy to eat. They have also stopped eating so they only strike out of aggression.
