Below is a copy of my letter and the response that I recieved from Andy at Campsaver.com:

Hi Victor,
Thank you for your email. I'd be happy to read the letter you sent me. However, our ticketing system discards attachments. Will you resend it to me?

We share a love of the outdoors and I am equally concerned about regulations that effect our ability to access our outdoor playgrounds. To be candid, CampSaver is a small business. We do not have a policy in place that details how the company as an entity endorses or does not endorse political issues. In short, the company itself does not have an official stance. We have no policy in place that even explains how we would take a stance. Not because we don't care or because it's not important, more because we're not that developed as a company. Since I am the owner I suppose I would be the one who would need to decide at some point how we will handle the company taking positions politically. At this point in time though, the company does not have a position on anything politically.

HonestIy though, I really do not know if the company itself will ever take political positions outwardly. Our company is represented by our 30 employees, each with varying positions and ideals. Since they represent the company and the company represents them, it would be impossible to have political positions that represented everyone that works here. I would not want anyone here to ever feel excluded or on the outside because of a political position the company takes as a whole. So, we may be apolitical i guess.

The company position is a reflection of me as a person. I keep my opinions to myself and don't don't express them outwardly. Concerning the National Monument near Canyonlands, I don't know enough about it. I've read some news articles here and there but I have not been actively engaged. Between constructing a new building, family and working till 2 am every day, i don't keep up. I'm sure i'll here more this week as I attend a trade show in SLC and read the daily news where OIA is a main sponsor.

If my personal opinion effects you shopping here, send me the letter and i'll give you a candid response.

Best Regards
Andy Stroman

Hi, my name is Victor and I am a lifelong resident of Logan. As I drive home from Ogden every day, I have been excited to see the progress that you have made on your new store/warehouse! It looks like it will be a great operation and resource for those of us that enjoy the outdoors!

I do however have a quick question for you. Recently, many members of the Outdoor Industry Association have endorsed a letter to President Obama in regards to a proposed National Monument near Canyonlands National Park. Though your company is not on the list of companies that have endorsed the idea, I would like to ask you about what your stance is in regards to such an idea. Many of the brands that you offer have endorsed such a plan, and I do not begrudge your company for offering these products to your customers, but I would really like to know your position. If you are unfamiliar with the letter, I have attached a copy.

I am an avid Mountain Biker, fly fisherman, camper, as well as an OHV'er. I love to get out and enjoy everything that Utah has to offer and ideas such as the Greater Canyonlands National Monument really worries me. Ideas such as this usually means restricting land use to those of us that use it responsibly and want our children to be able to enjoy it as well. I respect those that feel the area should be protected, but to potentially impose regulations that would keep anyone from accessing the area however they are able, I feel, is wrong. There are many ways to manage the area so that everyone can enjoy it.

As a consumer, I have decided that my dollars will go to supporting companies and organizations that promote inclusive land use regulations. That is why I have sent you this letter. I am anxious to hear your opinions on the matter.

Thank you!

Campsaver.com is just getting ready to open a new location along the highway just outside Logan. I have re-sent him the copy of the GCNM letter as he requested. I'm interested in hearing what else he may have to say.

I would've worded it along the lines of "I'm happy to see that your company was not part of this letter". Instead of making him state what his position is which he won't. I'd let him know what my position is and you're OK with me for being on the same side. I doubt he getting letters from people who dislike that his name was not on the letter. Positive pings are better.

I wrote that letter with 3 drafts. The first one was kind of confrontational and I didn't like it. The second one was too soft and I don't think I made my stance very clear. The one I sent, I feel, was a good compromise.

I truly want to know what his stance is and I do respect his opinion, even if it defers from mine. What I did not want to do was to offend or come across as another activist that is meant to be ignored. How many letters from SUWA and the like have you read all the way through? I know I usually toss the paper into the garbage before I even make it through the first paragraph. I did not want that to happen with my letter.

I think Andy has made it clear that, no matter what his personal feelings are, he will work to keep the name of his company from being tied to any activist group. I didn't really wish for more than that. Take a look at his site and what he sells. I'm willing to bet that his customers tend to lean towards the Environmentalist side of our argument. If he is forced to take a side, I would bet that he would not pick our side in this fight. By having him remain nuetral, we may not have gained anything, but neither has our opponents. Plus I have opened a line of communication that I can use to try and enlighten him about keeping public lands open for all users. One day, if his company continues to grow like it is, maybe he will be in a situation where what I have told him will help him shape an appropriate decision. One that is inclusive for all.
