My son tried to blow off his fingers today!

Me and my boys have been out shooting all weekend. We went rabbit hunting in Duchesne and shot a lot of .22 and shot guns.
So my brother called this morning and his boys want to go shoot. Well our guns are still in the jeep and we still have ammo so we go with them. We had a good time and shot a lot of rounds. After all the guns were put away and the area was cleaned up we were standing around talking about lunch and BAM! I look over to see what made the noise and see my 8 yr old boy holding his hand up blood dripping from his finger and thumb. CRAP! that kid just shot himself,I thought. I ran over and helped him sit down.

We cleaned him up as he was crying and in some shock. His fingers were cut and burned but not too serious.
The kid said he was trying to remove the slug from a live shell by holding it in one hand and hitting the rim with a rock.
Very lucky that he still has all of his digits.
Be safe, WH.

Interesting... I am sure you have had MANY MANY conversations about gun safety with him, as we all have with our children. Not one time Have I thought to tell them that the round it's self is dangerous, not just the gun..

Hope he recovers well.

Exactly what I was thinking. I'll add that to my mental list of things to tell the kidlets next time.

My buddy had to get 7 stitches in his finger as a kid because he smashed a shotgun shell primer with a framing hammer to see what it would do.

Both our dads have shotshell reloading equipment and so we had access to primers by themselves.

As a kid I reloaded a shotshell with a primer only. (No powder, wad or BB's) and I shot it indoors out of curiosity. It's still loud :D

We used to tape BB's to the primers of fully live shotgun shells and throw them off the garage roof... Only got about 1 out of 10 to actually go off, but it was a "blast" :D.

We did far, far more stupid things than that with shotgun shells, it's amazing that we only have scars to show for some of it, but it's probably a baaaaaad idea to post that kind of stuff.

Marbles taped to the bottom worked better than BBs. Man we were stupid.

Yeah, I did the marbles thing too. I WAS old enough to know better.
He is doing great. His thumb looks like a big blister, and his finger has some cuts. I'll bet he is good to go in a week:)

My dad reloaded every thing as well, he had powder kegs in his shop, we used to pour a trail like in the movies, leading to the tonka truck or any other sacrificial toy that was also loaded with powder, we also used to put our army guys in the trail to watchem melt, fun times!! Until dad started to notice that his powder kegs were all empty..........

Those orange hot wheel tracks make great whips....

I had a friend that was carrying .22 shells in his shirt pocket. He bent over and they fell out of his pocket. One went off and the slug stopped inside his heart. Emergency surgery and he lived. Just passed away this year of unrelated causes.

This is still how I start fires in the backyard firepit when we have company over.. 15 foot flames gets everyone excited..

Sucks to hear about your son, glad its not worse.. I will also make note to cover this with my children as well...
