I've had a handful of different street bikes over the years that very from cheap bikes to a really nice custom Harley Bagger. I pretty much got over street bikes and found dirtbikes in my late 20's. Over the past couple years I've done some decent distance 80%+ off road adventure rides on a trusty drz400. I've been itching to get a bike it's capable of playing down far more miles. I struggled really hard with what to get because most of me still wants to focus on off-road.I struggled really hard with what to get because most of me still wants to focus on off-road but I realized I really wanted something that I could see Canada and Alaska and other long-distance trips. Basically a bike I could do 300 to 500 miles of asphalt but still capable of 10 miles of dirt road to camp at night.
Obviously the BMW GS would be the bike of choice for most. Unfortunately that's a little out of my tax bracket this year. So I ended up settling with the v-strom 650.

I picked up a super clean 09 for $3800

So first thing I noticed is The speedometer is ridiculously inaccurate. I'll likely end of mounting a GPS permanently but for the time being I added a USB PowerPoint and a standard cigarettes style PowerPoint. Then clamped onto cheap waterproof iPhone case so I can use my phone GPS app for now.

Reading through some of Greg's post on here I decided I need a couple essentials like Bluetooth speakers. After looking at several options I opted just to buy a new helmet with built in Bluetooth

as well as the throttle stay he recommend Omni- Cruise

Next I hit up one of my favorite RME members for some Rocky Mountain ATV parts.

I picked up the ARC adventure jacket.
As well as a set of the tusk panniers.

With the cost of racks and my cheap ass I decided to build them. I had a vasectomy last Thursday so I'm out for a few weeks anyways and this should be a fun little project to keep me motivated while I can't ride.

Got started on those this afternoon for about an hour .

The Vstrom has always been attractive to me for its balance of capabilities, and cost.

I'm excited to follow this build.

Love it, the rack fab work looks great so far! I think you're off to a great start with mods & setting the bike up for long distance riding.

Your fab skills are stupid. I hope we can put in some miles of some type or another this year.

Finished up the rack. Painted it with some rattle can bed liner and bolted up one of the cans. man these are some ugly ass motorcycles to start with then add some big black metal boxes to really bring out the ugly.

Load those suckers up with weight, and they will make some awesome counter balance for wheelie practice :)

Well The Orange Turd had its first taste of carnage yesterday. Had massive hail storm roll through yesterday at work and blew the bike over in the parking lot. Kind of a bummer I didn't get to do the first scratches laying it down on a dirt road as intended.
