Myspace?

don't get me wrong, I used to talk more crap on myspace than anyone and still do. But my beef is with people that use it as a socializing experience to meet random people (or worse yet, a dating tool) and will base perceptions of others from the content of their page. Too many idiots get jealous of perceived friend hierarchy’s that are falsely created on myspace and that is lame.

But, lucky for us we are all allowed to use it how we choose and take from it what we will. I have found it entertaining and nice to dink around on when I'm bored and see what some friends that I met in Orlando are up to, or some HS pals that have moved to New York etc etc. Just because the system is abuses by many, doesn't mean it can't be used by others.

I think people that have such a vehement hate towards myspace are about the same as those that claim to love PBR. It's just "cool" to hate it and people are so afraid to be associated with the image it has that the miss out on what it actually can be.

You do realize what MySpace was originally intended for right???

I'm curious.

I do know that they data harvest that site and use that data for market strategies and tons of other valuable information that they re-sell. So basically, it's your life on commercial parade.

Exactly!!

I have a nationwide friend base and it is nice to have something that is widely used by many of them to keep in touch. It is also nice to have something to plan weekend activities if you have a regular group of friends you party with. I work far away from home so it is also nice to keep in touch with my friends when I don't have cell coverage for weeks at a time in the oil field.

The privacy controls have been beefed up so spamming is no longer a concern. If you browse with Firefox and Adblock+ it straight KILLS all the crap ads on all the pages so it is a usable site. I got on Myspace back in 2005 and a lot has changed since then. Some things have gotten worse...some things have gotten better but as a social networking tool it cannot be beat. It has taken me a long time to get on Facebook because there are a group of friends that would rather be on there than Myspace but I much prefer Myspace.

I don't know what it started as, but I registered in 02 I think because there was a thread on POR where people would leave funny comments on random people's pictures (back then you could comment on anyone's page even if you weren't friends) then post screen shots. Back then it was just a little thing in california. A couple years later it blew up.

Spence also touched on why it is a useful networking tool (even though we all know better because it has been pointed out with 100% accuracy that is is most certainly not) is that it's extremely prevelant and accessible to anyone around the world so you can find people on it. I'm sure the more efficient methods of keeping up with old friends and such are way more betterer, but are there as many people that use them? 241 million users.

and yes, it is an EXTREMELY valuable marketing tool. And even though it is a 100% innefficient social networking tool, the 2nd most influential business man in the United States found it useful enough to spend 580 million dollars to buy it.

Our entire lives are data mined regardless of whether or not we go to myspace. Use your credit card at the grocery store...DATA MINE...read your gmail....DATA MINE...browse RME...DATA MINE.

I watched a special on MSNBC about how thoroughly our lives are ran through a sieve for data and it is rather shocking but there is nothing you can do about it other than trying to remove every digital transaction from your life which is quite impossible these days.

I work with mailing lists all day long, and it's almost frightening the amount of information that is available to purchase.

I personally have really enjoyed MySpace. My best friend from kindergarten found me on there and just a few weeks ago, a girl I grew up with got in touch with me through there. One of my favorite aspects is being able log in, leave a brief comment as it races across my mind, and be done with it. I must admit though, I also love looking at everyone's pictures. It's a quick, fun way to kinda stay up on what everyone's doing. And there is my two cents! :)

I see nothing wrong with myspace i have used it to track down old friends from the Marines that there was no other way other than to pay an investigator to find them. I like it just because i can jump on leave a note to someone and check out there pics and stay up to date with whats going on with my friends and family. These days life is so busy with kids, work and so on i dont think they would appreciate it if i called them at 2am just to say hi. Yep i have myspace!

I think myspace is pretty cool, and ifyou just control your spam settings and make sure to enable captcha you wont get hardly any spam on there. I have re connected with a lot of friends from school, and I dont think I would ever use myspace except to put my presonal friends on my friends list and family....
