Need Help Bad: 82 Cj7 Wont Start

My Jeep is sitting in a parking lot not starting. It's really strange. You turn the key - it only makes a single Click (coming from the sylnoid). I replaced the sylnoid and its still making the one click sound. I thought for sure the battery needed to be cleaned up, I did it and still nothing.

I am asking you anyone out there what can I do to fix this.

It started, drove and ran awesome before I got to the parking lot of this shop. I unloaded my stuff jumped in to take off and the Jeep's not doing a damn thing - not even turning over, nor clicking or anything. Wiring?

What is it, I'm loosing my mind!

Battery shows that it has 12volts on the dash. should I try jumping it? I started it before I drove it to the shop today. It started perfect and now it just makes a single click and thats it.

I can't believe this stupid jeep - why is it acting this way?

I looked at the guage on the dash it says 12-14v, so I don't think the battery is dead, any other ideas?

I bet it is your battery. What does a starter draw, something like 3-500 amps(guessing)? I'm sure a weak battery would still register voltage.

I have had the same problem and most of the time it is corroded battery connectors. Removed them and cleaned them up and no problems since. Not enough current can get through to the starter. If that is not the case. Jump the wires on the solenoid to see if that is the problem. If the starter will turn over then it is a solenoid or wiring problem.

Good Luck, Brad J

yep, I'm betting bad battery. Even if it shows 12V doesn't mean it's not bad, does it hold a load? It takes more than just having 12V to start it. Throw another battery in and I bet it turns over.

Its like a ford, did the by pass on the sylnoid and still no start or crank. Cleaned the connections really well and still no start. What is happening is as if the car is not getting anything. I had this happen to me on a toyota truck I bought. It needed a nice tightening on the cables and it was fine but I did that and still nothing. I got it parked in a safe parking spot and out of the companies way but no tags, no plates, just a pos jeep to work on. I will get a charged battery to see if thats whats going on and go from there, gosh I hope it gets the job done!

I'll let you all know, thanks for the advice and help!

If it is not the battery, remember that battery cables have two ends to them, clean both ends. If still nothing I would guess the starter next.

do you have a volt meter?

1. Check the battery

2. Make sure you didn't get a bad silinoid, it happens all the time<-check see what is going in is same as what is going out...

3. Make sure the Silinoid is grounded properly. ie bolted to a solid piece of metal. If the silinoid isn't grounded it won't send power to the starter.

Report back and good luck... :D

I'm an idiot

I got schooled and it was a starter issue. I haven't replaced it but I put the jeeps ignition into the on position and banged it with a hammer and it started right up. what the hell, thanks for the help! regards
