I'm in the market for a new starter for the 383/TH700R4 that's going into my YJ and I was originally going to just buy a reman cheapie, but I was wondering if I could spend just a little more and get something that would be better for a crawler. I see lots of options in the Summit, Jegs, and Speedway catalogs, but I don't know what the practical/realistic differences are. Some claim to have more torque and are also smaller/lighter. Sounds too good to be true, so I'm guessing there's a downside to these models that I don't understand.

Anyway, I was hoping somebody could point me in the right direction here. There are a few options in the $110-$140 range that fit what I'd be willing to pay. Otherwise if there's no benefit to the options in that price range, I'd just as soon buy a cheapie reman and keep the old used one I have as a spare in my bucket of trail parts.

Any help appreciated

A starter is just one of those things that you don't really need to upgrade. That being said, I built a killer SBC years ago & used a TCI starter. They're meant for turning over high-compression engines. I actually was quite pleased, that Jeep was never very reliable (thanks to Holly ProJunktion) and my starter was used to move the Jeep much more than I care to admit.

Only time I worry about getting a nifty cool starter is on a HIGH compression motor....Anything you can run on pump gas will be fine with a standard reman....buy 2 if you are worried.

when in doubt, upgrade!

Go cheap and get the Warranty, I don't want to admit how many times the kid at Autozone has looked me funny when I took a cooked starter back... :D

the old CJ didn't have a gas gauge, I think you understand...
