new 92 toyota pickup owner with a few questions

hi i am in need of a toyota guru i have 2 questions (1992 yota pickup 4x4 manual trans

1st my truck is throwing trouble code 22 ECT i replaced the ect sensor and nothing. my symptoms are the check engine light and the gauge not working. i was told to replace my thermostat? how can i get this check engine light to turn off.

2nd the speedo isnt working. is the speedo on a 92 toyota pickup 4x4 electric or is it driven by a cable? i was told to replace the vehicle speed sensor

i am very confused and i know there are alot of youguys who own older yotas and know alot

thankyou!

EDIT: i have another dumb question about the speedometer as of 4/16/13 and i have yet to figure out why the 22ECT code is being thrown

I think the 92 is still cable driven. Look for the cable coming out of your transfer case. I don't know about the code, though, do you have the 22RE or 3VZE?

22re sorry i forgot to mention. i looked underneath and it has a vehicle speed sensor on the passenger side of the tranny could i still have a cable driven spedo

i think my '94 speed sensor was electric. It's really easy to tell. Crawl under the truck. look at the transfer case, and see if there are wires or a cable sticking out the rear part of the transfer case.

There are some wires coming out of your tranny - that's your reverse sensor (to trigger the reverse lights). I'm betting you have an electric speedo sensor on the rear of the t-case.

yah its the plug on the passenger side right were the rear drive shaft leaves the tcase is that what i need to replace? its called the vehicle speed sensor. Would i be ok getting one from a junkyard its like 200$ at orileys

I'm not sure what needs to be replaced. If there are wires coming out of it (instead of a cable), then I'd double-check the wires to make sure they aren't cut anywhere.

Yes, a junkyard should be fine (unless the sensor went out on the vehicle in the junkyard). You can usually find an entire t-case (including sensor) for $100-150 on KSL.

I don't know much about what causes the speedos to go out, sorry.

The 22R-E has 3 coolant temp sensors. Hopefully you replaced the correct one. It is not the easy one to get to right on top of the water neck. It is one of the 2 mounted in the front of the head, under the intake tube. One is Brown and the other is green. One is for the gauge and the other is the cold start injector timer. Usually the connectors are covered in junk and need to be cleaned. You can also remove the sensors (22mm, I think) and clean any corrosion from the tips. You will lose a minor amount of coolant.

i replaced the green one your talking about and nothing happened the check engine light stayed off for about 5 munites of driving and came back on iit does that every time it will stay off untill i start driving around

UPDATE: i took out the speed sensor and it is the kind with the plastic gear on the end, the sensor doesn't seem to be faulty. it is the plastic gear's teeth are stripped away. when the auto shops look up the part its the sensor but it dosent come with the plastic gear, can i just replace the gear it is labeled 6 18

is it called a spedo gear or what? i am stumped the dealer wants 350$ for just the sensor but it dosent have the plastic gear with it

i have another noob question. i replaced the gear at the end of the speed sensor. all is well but while installing the speed sensor with new gear (the gear is the exact same in every dimension as the old gear but the teeth aren't sheered out. now while trying to put this back into the truck i couldnt get the whole mechanism to seat properly, (the whole speed sensor with new gear) it slides in but the the sensor do sent seal up against the transfer case it sticks out about half a CM from going all the way in, i can't tell why i stuck my finger in the hole and there is nothing obstructing it from sliding in. im stumped has anyone else replaced this part before??

and on top of all this i broke off the mount that the bolt goes through to hold the sensor to the Tcase while trying to tighten it down to see if it would slide in. SUPID mistake..... im going to see if JB weld will hold it because the new sensor is almost 400$ so the last thing i wana do is by that

i dont know how to put them online, but i was thinking that since the splines on the gear are at an angle would jacking up the rear and spinning the tires slowly while inserting the sensor help?

That might work. I would disconnect the driveshaft at the tcase and turn the flange by hand. Rotating 37s have a lot of weight and could chew stuff up fast. Whatever you do, don't force it.

I've heard the brakes on eldo calipers font hold well when you have big tires. I would go with a sky tcase ebrake.
