One other thing and I’m not sure if this bugs some folks or not? Maybe just my knuckle dragging V8 ness? I HATE front drive cars. Torque steer totally sucks to deal with.

Performance oriented FWD cars like the Civic SI and Veloster long ago figured out how to deal with torque steer through either LSD’s or trick computerized traction aids. Hell, even my Kizashi which is more “sports” than “performance” doesn’t have an ounce of torque steer and I’ve thrashed the hell out of it autocrossing.
But yes, there is a satisfaction that RWD has that FWD and AWD just can’t match.

If I were looking for a new, fun DD it would have to be the Hyundai Veloster N. Just a fantastically fun car all around. There is a reason why it was Road and Track's 2020 Performance Car of the Year. They are a bit small, but if you're looking at Mustangs, these have a bigger interior.

If you need more room, probably a Kia Stinger GT2. AWD, 360hp, killer looks, and just solid performance. One of the most fun family sedans on the market right now. This is high on the list as a replacement for my Kizashi in a year or two.

The Genesis G70 is the Stinger's stable mate, but is more luxurious and you can get it with a proper manual transmission. I haven't driven one, but I hear good things.

I feel like in any discussion of a fun DD, you would be remiss not to consider the Honda Civic SI. The new '22 model returns to a more understated body, which I'm glad of. I'll be interested to drive one, but so far the reviews are great.

But if you insist on being a dullard and buying an American car (hencho en Mexico/Construit au Canada), I second Cody and say a late model Taurus SHO.

Marc if you do entertain the idea of a Kia or Hyundai my cousin is the head honcho at the Layton dealership, he is the one the drives the topless 52 Chevy truck, he also has a new challenger. I vote for a cheapish beater/commuter and maybe a restomod boat tail Riviera for the fun?

I bet it was cheap back then too? Driving the 40 the other day with the 455 I could definitely feel all that torque and I wasn't really hot rodding it, went around one turn and my foot fumbled around trying to find that little spoon peddle I felt that rear end almost wanting to bust loose.

I got the challenger and parked my land cruiser which I had wanted to do for a while. I get 18 mpg without trying and I can get 2 car seats in it. It's got almost 112k miles and I'm the third or fourth owner. It's not pristine by any stretch but it's fun to drive and wasn't too much money.

Could I and should I probably be driving a 2000 Camry instead? Sure. But I've never had something like this and for some reason my wife was down for it when it came up.

I am pretty intrigued by the stinger. It's gotten pretty great reviews and sounds like a lot of fun. Maybe when they have been around for a while longer and they drop in price on the used market

Pretty sure I paid $250 for it in 1988. Needed new 15” tires that would have cost me about $200. A couple power brake burnouts later and it REALLY needed new tires

Perfect example is a rental car I had in Missoula this week. A Mazda MX5 or something like that. Torque steer every time you turn. You can have the front drivers. They are just not for me. I guess I base my opinion on my experiences with cars I do drive. I’m just not a fan of FWD and don’t see that changing. When I’m throwing down my cash for something, I want to like it.

They are more awesome than they should be, right? What I’d really like is a Fusion body with a Mustang power train. That’d do everything I’d ever want it to.
