New FSJ Maybe

I might be buying my buddy Justin's '71 J4000 for $200. He went and picked up a '92 4 Runner for $200 and wants me to take the truck off his hands. The truck is in pretty rough shape but runs decent just needs some carb work which isn't a problem for me since I just happen to have a spare laying around. It needs a new windshield and has a pretty good oil leak probably from the transmission or transfer case couldn't really tell it was raining out and I didn't want to crawl under it.

I was thinking of doing a SOA and rear shackle reversal, some 4 inch lift springs and the crossover steering from BJ's Off-Road all those parts will run under $1000 which is nice. With all that I should get about 10" or 11" of lift.

Just wondering what peoples thoughts are on this. What size tires should I be able to run after all that? I know I'll need to replace the front axle for sure. And disc brake on all fours will be a must for me and I'm sure there are alot of things I haven't considered yet. FSJ guys let me know what you think, any advice on what the plans are or what they should be is welcome. I want to make this a very capable rig and eventually have it rolling around on 40" or bigger tires.

the j4000 most likely has the 60 front and rear i have the 4 inch spring lift on my 79 cherokee and i run 37s with no issue if it were me i would run just the soa and shackle flip that will get you the 6-7 inch lift and you would be able to run 40s with some minor cutting but the fsj are a blast

The rear is a Dana 60 but the front is a close knuckle 44. I am probably going to just start with the soa and shackle flip and go from there. At least that way I know the front can handle the 37s I'd probably be running for a while. He has taken the truck up Forest Lake in stock form with some really skinny 31s on it. Hopefully it will be mine in the next two weeks.

I really can't wait to get my hands on it, my wife isn't too thrilled because it's pretty ugly in her eyes, the bed has been shortened about a foot I think and needs some cleaning up, it's even got some pretty comfy bucket seats in it.

just for reference, the only FSJ's w/front 60's were the M715 series and a few factory wreckers/cab and chassis. And they are awful 60s- closed knuckle, huge bolt pattern that no one makes wheels for, 44-size tubes and shafts. :D

I would snag it for 200 but not lift it so high. Scrounge up some 715 fenders and you can run 40's no problem... :D The problem w/FSJ's and big tires is that the front ends are REALLY short-- you start hitting cab or radiator support in a big hurry.

And the only J4000's with a 60 in the rear were 5k rated so J4600 and up the rest of them had 44's front and rear.

Im guessing this is Justins FSJ you are looking to buy?? So is he planning on putting his Rockwells under the 4runner?

For 200 I would say its a steal. With just a lift and aftermarket wheels it will look like a completely different truck

Yeah it's Justins. He said something the other day about rockwells under his 2500 maybe. I think he's nuts but it could be fun. He says he just wants to do a SAS on the runner and probably 37s, make it a daily driver/wheeler.

Thanks I will do that I took another look at BJ's and the kit is 460 bucks and I thought to myself "I'm sure there has got to be a cheaper and better way"
