New Law

Okay first off I really did not hear everything in the new law they are wanting to have. But the parts I did hear about is talking about getting a ticket if you are distracted. They are say things like if you are eating, smokeing, talking on cell phone, putting on make-up, ect. What do people think about this? How is it going to be decieded if you are distracted? I know I see a lot of people that are able to drive and do all the ones I said.

My understanding was this is a secondary reason to pull you over, not a primary. If you are driving too fast, or slow, or erratically, and they see you eating drinking, smoking talking on the phone, putting on make-up, shaving, splitting up a fight between little ones... You will get a distracted driving ticket. Seems like law enforcement officers like this idea.

Having moved here from California, I have to say the worst offenders in Utah seem to be cell talkers. In California, its all the above and then some...

After following a 16 year old girl talking on her cel phone from the highschool the other day for about 3 miles before I could get around her (which was just plain scary) I say make it law. But I do get your point about the cops having to decide what is distracted. I personally don't use my cel phone when I drive except under rare conditions because you can't drive as well if you are talking on one, but that's my own decision.

What about the Provo officer that hit and killed a guy walking across University Ave. the other night? Did he have both eyes on the road, was he on the phone, radio, computer? Maybe he was driving distracted.

what about old people? it seems like i always get stuck behind a 60+ driver who drives too slow, not signaling, tunning from the wrong lane, not checking their blind spots, the list goes on and they usually have some boat sized cadillac

We already have enough laws to protect from ourselves while we are driving! Why don't they start enforcing the already existing ones first?

I am sure the Sandy Officer that lives in Lehi, that runs well over the speed limit every morning in his marked car could use a good lesson in leading by example!

I really don't think making some new laws about this is going to fix the problem.

If this goes through, we might as well pass a law for every little thing that has to do with common sense.

H.B. 217 would help. This bill would prohibit a person younger than 18 years old from using a wireless telephone while operating a motor vehicle.

H.B. 237 is a good one as well. It repeals the requirement that an off-highway vehicle be registered to be transported on a public land, trail, street, or highway

yes, but they are talking about moving the speed limits from 65 to 70 and from 75 to 80.

they should just ban the elderly, women, and fat people from driving. That would solve 80% of the problem. You could target asians and solve the rest of the problem but that would be racial discrimination ;) ;)

That has always been a stupid law.

Needless law in my opinion. If you are driving erratically, as the genius who wrote this law put it, then you should already be getting ticketed for reckless driving. Just because some dumbass in the state legislature sees someone eating a salad and driving poorly because of it, he does not need to pass a law to prove he should be there (he probably shouldn't be anyways, most of them shouldn't). What he should have done is call it in to the police and tell them someone was breaking a law that is already in place, by driving recklessly or dangerously.
