Trip Report Newfoundland solo run

Sunday trip out to Newfoundland Mountains. I'd like to go back. Has anyone had trouble w/ the Union Pacific railroad dicks on the causeway? I believe it must be a public throughway. Otherwise, they'd have a locked gate to keep the riff raff out.

I made it about 20 ft. beyond this point at the top of Miner's Basin but had to back down because my Heep's 1 bbl Carter carb. conked out and wheels started spinning. It doesn't look steep here but it was, and I was all by my lonesome about 10,000 miles from help. I was the only one in the Newfoundlands. Gonna replace the carb w/ a 2100 Motorcraft and put some lockers in the back axle. Had to back all the way down the road to the tailing pile you see in the center of the pic.

I don’t know the details but I do remember when I was fishing the lake, my company had to get special permission for us to get on the causeway.

Edit: I don’t remember if it was UP or Sanders (I think it’s Sanders), who own a bunch or property around there.

You'll like the 2100 carb. It was a huge improvement for me over the carter. Made my exhaust smell funny though sometimes. Over my time with it I had several people ask me if I was running vegetable oil instead of gas. :rofl:

Maybe it was because I was always cooking manifold hot dogs on trail runs.

Been out there a few times the last year and once about a month ago. A train came as we were on the way back so we pulled to a side loop around one of the buildings. The train engineer honked as he went by and gave a nod. So I kind of expected to see someone towards Lakeside. But nothin came of it. We were respectful and stopped away from the tracks until the train was passed. I doubt you'll get much shit out there to be honest... Who's out there close enough to even come do anything? The range is so much bigger than I thought previously because I always go out overcast or foggy days. There are some awesome relics out there. A bunch of old vehicles and mine equipment up a couple canyons and some flattened trailiers down some washes... . I'll go out and spend a 3 day weekend soon to explore more as soon as I get a chance.

I went there once with ExUT, February 2013. We started at Promontory Point. I was low on fuel after day 1 so i decided it wouldn't be prudent to stay another day exploring with the group. I was given directions of "go back to the tracks, follow them back the way we came in, until you come to the closed gate. Make a right, then keep going until you hit the freeway."
Well, I drove to the first closed gate which happened to be at the other side of the causeway. Which really sucked because now I was really, really low on gas. I contemplated ramming the gate (made of i beams), shooting off the lock (probably woulda killed myself). So I backtracked across the causeway. In my attempt to save precious fuel, I dropped out of 4WD. Along the way, I fishtailed on some ice, and ended up on the tracks perpendicular to traffic with a popped bead on my front tire. Luckily, I had a PowerTank and was able to re-seat the tire and continue.
When I arrived to the point where the open gate that was supposed to be closed to let me know to make a right, I looked to a fence that said 'No Trespassing'. I thought that I might go down another long road to another locked gate. So I made the decision to try to make it back to the PP visitor center where we started.
Along the way, I was doing a mental inventory of the food I had, and figured that I'd probably freeze to death before I starved to death once the 4Runner stopped. I began making a series of vids explaining my actions, and my thought processes lest anyone who found my body concluded I committed suicide or something. It was a very fun and beautiful trip for me before it turned scary. Without the possibility of death, there can be no adventure.

Nappy, let me know if you're going back out. I still need to explore mining camps on the east side of the island. Also need to check out caves near Lakeside.

I am so down to get back out there and explore. I'm hitting the Rubicon on the 7th of July and that's my last real "planned" trip of the year. Kind of open to whatever the next couple months... I'll definitely post up before the next time!

This is the guy that sold me my 2100. A bit spendy but if you’re thinking about a Weber it’s the same price and way better. He makes it a bolt on project with adapters and the right linkage as well as sets it up for the right altitude.
