Nice neighbor - bad raccoons

So the neighbors are very nice, I have been here 11 years and they have been there longer than me. Very quiet, keep to themselves, never more than a hello. So I don't really want to ruffle the feathers here.

But they are animal crazy to the point where they are stupid. They leave peanuts out for the magpies, cat and dog food for all of the neighbors animals to come over. To the point where their next door neighbors dog is obeese because he is always going over there for extra food. They feed the pigeons, the doves, the quail, whatever they can feed they feed. The only bother is the dumb magpies that fly the peanut shells all over and make a mess, but I can live with that as well.

So today she mentions that three raccoons just showed up and have been eating the extra cat food she leaves out. I am not really excited about raccoons in the neighbhood. So my first comment was that if they came back I would leave a trap out for them and we can hand them over to the animal control. Well the idea that any animal would get hurt put her blood pressure through the roof. She is not going to allow me to trap, hurt or let anyone else hurt a raccoon.

I was thinking that I could talk her into me trapping the animal and I would take it for a drive up the canyons and let it free. But I just read that it is illigal to hold or transport a raccoon without a permit.

What options to I have? Lure them into my yard to trap them and turn them over to animal control myself?

The other small problem is that she works for the SLC PD. She does crime investigation. My guess is that she would bring the legal issues up and want to see them enforced if I did anything shady.

I think I started a thread not long ago about coons, I never did do anything about the ones by me, I think with the warmer weather they moved elsewhere. Probably closer to the farm animals.

call animal control to come set traps. that way she cant get mad at you for harming the beasts. she may be mad at you calling animal control, but she will get over it. she has to understand your concerns with a mischievous, rabbid, wild animal roaming the hood.

I can't imagine them coming out to set traps for every racoon call. MAybe the easiest thing is those motion activated sprinklers.

I called about raccoons when we lived in SLC, they said to kill them if I could. Animal Control, I mean.. apparently raccoons are an invasive species or something. *shrug*

i would imagine it depends on where you live. but i know they will come trap stray cats, i would bet they will come for racoons.

I've heard of them providing the traps for stray cats but never actually doing the trapping. I'm sure they would atleast provide the traps for coons, maybe even do it for you since they are a major pest.

As for the neighbor, I would not give it two thoughts about trapping and/or killing them. Especially if the neighbors are basically bating them in, I'd be fuming.

were as she lives in sandy she has no real pull with the police department out there... her word would be just as good as yours... my GF works for SLC PD and says to just do what you want and let her prove you did it on her land... otherwise she has no right to tell you not to do it on your land...

I she loves animals so much, you would think that she would want the raccoon's caught! If they get used to being fed there, they will defend their territory. Meaning they will kill the cats and most likely the obese dog if they feel like the other animals are horning in. Raccoons are not nice creatures!

well here ya go call this number 801-491-5678. That is the DNR (fish and game) It just so happens it is my wife that handles utah and sl county dealing with the coons, snakes, marmets and so on. She will bring the traps by and catch and well yep shoot them. She will not tell her that she is going to kill them just to keep her sane but yea this is what she does so give her a call she was bored last week......give her something to do her name is Connie and she will be happy to kill stuff for ya

I nominate her for official RME Wildlife Control Officer.

Pretty pathetic when its my wife that has the bad ass job and the nice truck parked in the driveway. She took my manhood years ago and carries it in her purse now this is just an insult to my manhood:( But if ya'll ever have any questions just ask if she dont know she will find out for ya. Rusted talked to her day and she was excited but no dead coon yet!

I got in the habit of taking them up to north ogden divide and protecting myself with a gun. After trapping 4 in a month, I thought I had them all. Tonight, our friend was playing with 15million candlepower flashlight and she spotted two in my tree on the back patio. I feel like I need some more recourse than DNR to solve the "coon" problem....

I'd be glad to make a snuff film with these two as the stars if it weren't for my new found political ambitions. Plus, I don't want to get arrested for discharging a firearm within city limits. I'll keep folks posted
