Hi All!
My name is Mike Marrow. I'm currently in Little Rock, Arkansas, but will be moving (transferring with company) to SLC on Oct. 15th.

I have a 83 Yota that I'm working on. She should be trail ready by the Spring. I just bought her a month and a half ago, but have already made a lot of changes. So far she has a new suspension (Cut off old suspension and welded on the lowrangeoffroad.com Classic 3' Kit (best kit I've found, even has highsteer)), completely rebuilt the knuckles, up graded the front brakes to 86+ vented, fj80 master cylinder, rear disk to be installed this week, tossed the bed (flatbed will be finished this week), new exhaust, and completely new charging system (battery, voltage reg, alternator, distributor, coil pack, plugs and wires). Also plan on installing on-board air (york compressor to small tanks out back) before I make the move out. The 4wd isn't working b/c the front driveshaft angle is too steep. Instead of moving the perches, I've decided to install a high pinion front pumpkin'. I'm planning on purchasing both diffs with 4.88 and Zipp lockers and mounting up BFG 35's. The body is a little rough, but that will come in time.

I'm in need of some advise. There are no smog laws here, but I've read about the sniff test there. Is it hard to pass the smog test in an old rig? Is there a specific shop that I should go to? Will a cracked windshield pass inspection? I have no error lights on (on the dash) and the horn works, so that one less thing to worry about. :)

I've been reading about Moab (and Utah in general) for years, but I've never been out west. I'm super stoked and can't wait to see those red rocks! :D

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to RME and to Utah (when you get here).

There are some smog and pretty strict equipment inspection here but people always seem to make due. I'm not much help in that department as I don't have any "on road, off-roaders currently.

Hope you find the site useful. Moab will blow your mind if you haven't been there yet.

Mike,
Welcome to best place on Earth. I am from Texas and have lived all over the US. This is the best place you will ever find. I hit Moab a few times per year. You will have to get that rig finished and come and play with us.

I am Military and have my Rig registered in Texas because of the safety inspection. I really cannot help you there. You will have to get here and meet some people. My understanding is there are some 4x4 friendly safety inspectors, but they are tight lipped. Your rig will atleast have to appear legal from the outside before anyone will work with you. The UHP here is getting strict on that stuff. Don't forget your mud flaps.

On emissions, a well running motor will pass the emissions test as long as you still have all the factory stuff in place. If not, start sourcing all that when you get here. If you fail the sniffer test, post up your results. People will help you figure out what is going on. Would be great if you can find someone with a 4 gas analyzer to help you tune it if need be. I would think a dyno shop or any decent performance shop should be able to help you. Hopefully Utah still gives you the numbers if you fail. Makes it much easier to figure out.

Do a search online for CruiseMoab. This is a great weekend to go to Moab. I do not register for the event any more, but me and some friends go this weekend every year.

Thanks for the insight guys! I'm stoked about Utah!
Is there a list of what all they check? Mudflaps won't be a problem, but I don't have an e-brake. Planning on a transfer case e-brake, but don't have the time to install. Looks like I might need to just leave her registered in Arkansas for a while. =(
