I knew my old trucks tranny was going and while I had it on the ground to replace the starter ring I spilled half the fluid so I decided to drop the pan and replace the filter and fluid...

I took the pan off and found this....

I worked in a transmission shop in high school and I saw a LOT of pans like that...to be honest...all of them. Every single pan that I dropped had metal in it...don't stress it unless you are already having problems. If you haven't changed the fluid in 50k miles then changing the fluid might actually bring some of the wearing or failing parts to the forefront, especially band servo pistons. The new detergents go in and clean out all the gunk and can be the death blow to an ailing transmission.

Regularly change your trans fluid as per your owners manual...if you don't and let it go 50k miles then you might prepare yourself for the consequences of ignoring your maintenance schedule.

You have to think on the positive side...all that stuff is not circulating through your transmission and the magnet has done its job.

yes there is a problem... the 1-2 gear is going out... reverse gear is almost gone... J&G quoted me $4500 for a new trans that will never have to be fixed again...

$4500 for a bulletproof transmission might be worth doing if you plan to keep the truck another 100k miles. The pan in the 97 Grand I bought last fall looked about half that bad when I dropped it 5 weeks ago, no issues though with shifting.

seeing it only has 157,000 miles I do plan on keeping it for another 100000+ miles.... and yes I will be having it rebuilt once I get the funds together!
