I just got a quote for a cage from S & W Racecars for my blazer and they are quoting me for a type of tube I'm not familiar with. They said they use EWS mild steel is that okay to use or should I spend the extra $300 and go with DOM. is EWS elecric weld steel? What do you guys think?

I am pretty sure its the same as CREW...not positive though...different people call it different things (especially when you get into different markets and such)

EDIT: found some info in this thread here and yes it stands for Electric welded steel tube...

so is it adequate for a cage?

honestly, I cant say...if it is indeed the same (or similar) to CREW then I would say its just fine for a cage. CREW should be stronger than HREW because its cold worked and not hot worked. In that thread there are a couple steel sites, I would search around those to see if you can find some specs. Also check out fabricating sites like www.hobartwelders.com/mboard/ and ask there, you can usually get some good info from the guys on there because for a lot fo them its their job to know that stuff.

If It Is Not Going To Be Rolled Over And Over Than You Should Be Fine Dom Is By Far The Best. It Is The Only Thing I Would Use. I Rolled My Buggy 13 Times Last Year And Only 2 Bent Tubes. But If Is Going To Be Designed For The One Roll Then You Should Be Ok. Just Remember How Much Your Rig Actually Ways When Making That Decision And The Design.

One thing, if it's not DOM it's not going to be completely uniform in diameter, I'm not sure if that's inportant to you but DOM is all I would use for my cage.

EWS is electric weld steel, but it doesn't really tell you what kind of tube it is. DOM and poop pipe are both electrically welded. If they are making you a cage ask a lot of questions and read the label on the tube they use. The label will probably reference an ASTM standard. The Marmon Keystone website has a lot of good information about tubing standards.

After you know the material you need to know something about the design. A strong cage can be made from inferior materials. It will just weigh more.

S&W Race Cars highly recommends that you consult your NHRA or IHRA rule book for proper installation requirements. S&W roll bars and roll cages meet or exceed NHRA, IHRA and NMCA requirements for material size and thickness, but must be installed in accordance with the sanctioning body's guidelines. The NHRA, IHRA & NMCA require a properly installed window net with any roll cage installation, regardless of class.
