NP 229 Question

Hey I have found that I have a NP 229 in my Wagoneer. What is the info on this Case. Is it strong ? Or a piece of s***. What else could you use instead and are there any upgrades for it ? if you have any information I would appreciate it., Thanks.

Ah, the ol' 229....had that in my first Cherokee. No upgrades available. Fixed rear yoke is stock. 4 hi has no center diff lock, so you can spin one tire if you are trying to wheel in 4hi. Umm....Vacuum actuated mode selector can be a pain the arse. Uhhh......I blew mine up 3 times. :D

O that explains it. I took my front driveshaft off to get it re-built and pu the car in 4hi just to see if the yoke would spin and then the whole car didn't even move at all.I guess that swhere the one wheel wonder expression came from. Lockers in the axles would keep them all spinning wouldn't it ?

I agree, I went through 2 myself..The 229 has a good low range very similar to the 208...The clutch pack and the vacuum sh_t make it a mother if anything goes wrong..You might want to look for a jeep 208, its an easy swap and has a fixed yoke as well unlike the chev 208....
