I have an '02 Duramax and I noticed the front drive shaft has lots of slop where it comes out of the T-case. A mechanic buddy told me its most likely going to be trashed inside so I should plan to replace it. Since the truck is my DD I can't afford to have much downtime if it needs a full blown rebuild.
My questions are:
1. How hard is it to do a rebuild, and would I need any specialized tools?
2. where is a good place to get parts for a rebuild locally?
3. Where is a good place for a rebuilt replacement local or otherwise?
4. Are there any upgrades I should consider doing while its getting replaced?

Thanks guys. I figured six states was the best option if I rebuild my case. How hard is it to get all the bearings and seals replaced? Any specialized tools?

While your at it do the upgrade that prevents the pump from rubbing a hole in the case, search it is a very common problem with those cases.

Funny thing is I already bought that part, I was just waiting for a good time to pull it out.
I decided to just buy a rebuilt unit so I won't have any surprises or downtime
