"...the Obama administration on Wednesday said it will cancel oil drilling leases on 100,000 acres near two national parks and other protected areas in Utah."


So this just killed how many jobs in Utah??

What does this mean for public land access?

update with a little math

100,000 acres = 156.25 square miles

that is the equivelent of 13 x 12 mile rectangle. Only I am sure that the areas under change are swiss cheesed throughout the large area

FYI they put 16 wells on 1 square mile. 156.25 sq/m X 16 = 2500 wells. Assuming its all drillable land.

i'm not surprised. Those who voted for Obama will now get what they wanted.

funny thing is i've driven across there and i couldn't see the drillers until i banged my knee into one. I mean they are painted sand and nearly invisible. what's the big freakin deal with drilling? I think we need to create more supply and jobs.

Funny thing is on this, on Island in the Sky/Dead Horse Point, you can see some of the wells from miles away, even though they are painted sand. Just food for thought.....

So what? They won't be there forever. The land reclaims itself very quickly once the rigging is removed. To me, all those city buildings downtown are just as fugly as the drilling rigs. Only difference is that it takes longer for the buildings to go away.

One things that does not make me happy is when a very good trail gets ripped right open for a rigging path. It's happened several times. But they seem to reclaim well once the drilling is done.

I'm just making the point that they aren't as invisible as people are making out. And comparing downtown SLC to the middle of a desert......?

Bingo... I'm not exactly sure on the timeline and it depends on how deep the well goes, but most drilling rigs seem to get erected & taken down within 3-6 months. After that the rig gets taken down & moved to the next location. All that's left is the well head and some pipe. In some cases there are a few steel tanks and that's it. Not really an eyesore after the rig moves on.

I am not agreeing or disagreeing or saying Obama is good or Obama is bad, but I have a question about this.

What exactly do you get with pumping for 3-6 months? Again, I don't **** about oil, but are the rewards for 3 months pumping worth time and effort is costs to get it?

They're not pumping anything with the rigs, the rig drills a hole and puts pipe into the ground. Once the rig is taken down the hole produces natural gas over time. The natural gas comes to the surface because the formation it is held in is under pressure. In the end there's a well head at the site perhaps some small containers for waste water & oil collection, but nothing that will stick out like a sore thumb on the skyline, like the enviro-nuts want you to believe.

You're probably thinking about an oil well pump, one of those moving & reciprocating things. 98% of the stuff in Western CO and Eastern UT is drilling for natural gas, not oil.

This is a drilling rig, this is what would have been assembled and taken down within 6 months or so.-
