I just really wonder how they'll deal when an actual winter storm hits. It's just going to be AWFUL! bodies in the streets and stuff. I wonder if like, Wyoming runs out of money and salt in the first week of snow? Hahhaaha

You would think with the size of the lake, they wouldnt run out of salt...

Just how do the other states manage without salt?

I seem to recall that they slashed the snow removal budget in SLC a few years back under Rocky. The reason being that the mild winters were indicative that global warming was taking hold and we didn't need to worry about snow anymore.

most states don't use salt... colorado uses sand.... when I lived in wyoming they would plow the roads but still leave a good snow pack on the roads and people knew how to drive on them...

But here in Utah land of the salt everything is different...

That is because the wasatch front is a major population center. Something Wyoming doesn't have. If we left snow pack on the roads we would all die or not get anywhere that is for sure.

So why are we not just getting sprayer trucks and driving them out to the great salt lake, filling them up, then spraying them on the streets...I never could understand that with salt content of up to 30% or whatever...

I've hardly seen any snowplows the last couple of years.

I was doing 70 on the snowpacked east belt of 215 on Sunday night in my front wheel drive car. Didn't really bother me, but the SUV's that I passed that were going 25 must have thought I was crazy.

The only plows that I've seen are the 4-6 staggered plows running up and down the freeways slowing traffic, and laying down way too much salt.

Colorado uses mag chloride... and it's worse on your car than regular old salt. It's basically a chemical mixed salt water solution, which keeps the roadway from freezing longer.

It's corrode rubber, steel and aluminum... so instead of piling up your car on a icy road, the mag chloride slowly eats away at your car over time. Brilliant!

If you wanted a real answer to using the water from GSL it's all about getting it when there is snow on the ground. It's easier to dump a bunch of snow in a pile than build a retention pond for holding the salt brine. Your mound of salt isn't going to run off if you get a crack in the concrete. Now cities that share a border with the GSL I don't know why they wouldn't use it instead of salt.

They blew their wad prematurely on that monster storm. Ut county recieved 0'' of snow that day but it is still white on the roads due to the unused salt scattered everywhere.

I have always wondered this too? If we have a body of water that is salty-large enough that it can bee seen on the smallest maps of the US, even outer space. Why can we not put some of that salt on our roads? I understand that there are operating expenses as well but they also were complaining about the 200+ accidents that occurred in the last storm. Cause and effect.
