The U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday overwhelmingly approved a bill saying that anyone offering an open Wi-Fi connection to the public must report illegal images including "obscene" cartoons and drawings--or face fines of up to $300,000.

That broad definition would cover individuals, coffee shops, libraries, hotels, and even some government agencies that provide Wi-Fi. It also sweeps in social-networking sites, domain name registrars, Internet service providers, and e-mail service providers such as Hotmail and Gmail, and it may require that the complete contents of the user's account be retained for subsequent police inspection.

...

The definition of which images qualify as illegal is expansive. It includes obvious child pornography, meaning photographs and videos of children being molested. But it also includes photographs of fully clothed minors in overly "lascivious" poses, and certain obscene visual depictions including a "drawing, cartoon, sculpture, or painting." (Yes, that covers the subset of anime called hentai).

Anyone want to take bets on how fast the 1st Amendment lawsuit gets filed?

This never works, and it won't work with wi-fi connections either.

sad.

internet is a open forums no one owns anything, and especially the gov.

to a certain degree i can see the problem. Places are providing open connections to people and they cannont hold anyone accountable, whereas if you had your own connection at home, it can be traced back to you via your accnt with your service provider and you could be held accountable.

However, i still don't agree with it. The gov should go after the shops and then the shops can decide if they want to put in systems to prevent it (which there is) or shut it down or at least put in some control of responsiblity.

illegal is illegal.

I don't understand why a sexually oriented site couldn't be required by law to register MAC addresses with corresponding IPs. It would kind of be chasing your tail a little (harder to prove than tax evasion) but would provide for prosecution when a business or person is caught.

Then you get into that whole thing of what's a 'sexually oriented' site and whatnot.....

(oh, look, another can of worms)

....aaaaaand then you'd be criminalizing sexually oriented website by logical extension. Why sexually oriented websites, morally offensive as they may be, should require anyone to jump through more hoops than age verification is a matter that should and likely WOULD be argued ad infinitum by our pals at the ACLU.... just like it is every time this kind of thing comes up.

Waste of governmental time if you ask me. There are bigger fish to fry. Websites with legitimately illegal material can be found and prosecuted by other means. Are ISP's going to start employing detectives now? A whole cadre of Content Police?

It's 1983!!!

linky no worky... fix the link so I can read it and have an opinion...

But based on what you have qouted, all they are saying is that if you operate a WiFi setup in your restaurant, for example, and you know about illegal activity, you have to report it or you will be fined.

It's the same thing they do with Dr's. If the Dr knows there is abuse at home, they have to report it or face a fine as well. Same thing....

If I was in the house, the vote would have been 410 to 2 (I would be for it)....

....again, all based on your qoute.

If you know about anything illegal, you are supposed to turn them in. That goes for everything, including minor things.

Besides, what kind of person would look the other way if they knew their neighbor was a pedophile!??!?!!! That's WTF! -_-
