Do you guys use socket welders on your poly pipe stuff? I'm trying to school myself on these things. Next summer I plan on redoing the underground water system on some rental property I own. 4 inch mains going to 3/4 inch services. (a few hundred feet of each) I have thought about buying the welders to do this, but there are butt fusion machines (looks harder to do) and socket welding machines. (looks easier) But this stuff is all new to me. If Chad doesn't do this, does anybody else use one of these at work?

Are you talking about HDPE pipe? We had 20+ miles of it installed this summer, all welded. The welding looked very simple if you can rent the machine for a reasonable price.

This is the style of welder they used.

If it's something else, I don't have a clue:D

The only type of socket and but welding we do is with a pipe called aquatherm. We actually just bought the welder to do this. I have done the poly before on some 6" lines for a chiller. We rented the machine for that from furgeson plumbing supply. I know the machine we just bought was $3500- $4000 for the smaller hand held machine so if your just using it for a few days I'd recommend renting one.

Skinner, That is what I'd be using. The machine you posted is a butt welder. I wanted to go socket welder because it looks less technical. But, its the same basic process.
Chad, I don't think renting would be a viable option. We will be doing it all next summer after work and on the weekends. The three to four grand sounds about like what I've been looking at. I don't know about this stuff because I haven't done any of it. The stuff I've done so far I have used brass compression fittings on. I just want this to be a permanent deal because my kids are going to inherit this place and I don't want em to have the heartache I've had.
I kinda wanted to know if this is as hard as they make it sound or if it's pretty straight forward and could be done by the average guy. I could go with the brass stuff, but the rubber will leak eventually wont it?

It's not extremely hard. Just need to make sure the ends are cleaned and fused together well. You may have to take a coarse on how to use it and take a test in order to operate me buy one. I just had to take a 4 hour course on ours to get certified on the aqua therm pipe

Where did you take the course? Was it given by the machine builders?

A salesman from furgeson plumbing supply came to our shop and gave the class. May want to give them a call
Thanks, I'll do that. Sounds like that's where you guys bought it. It would be nice to have local support if something went wrong with it.
