As said....compare the d70 to the rebels....20d is a notch up, most consider it a semi-pro camera. The stuff a 20d can do will scare you, you will probably never use half the features, but they are nice to have if you need them. The rebel XT is a great camera too.
I have shoot with a d70 and some of the higher end Nikons, I would take the XT over most of them and 20d over pretty much all of them....
OR, if you have cash to burn, just get the Canon MarkII :D $3000+ for the body only, but daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaam it is cool.

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Caleb?

What camera did you end up getting? I've been thinking about getting in to photography a little. I'm also looking for a cheaper but good camera.

I actually haven;t gotten a SLR YET :p Canon just came out with a new Rebel, the XTi and it's like 10.1mp and is supposed to be pretty nice, the review I read they liked it a lot but thought the Nikon D80 was a little nicer. The XTi is the same price as the old XT, $899, and the D80 is $999.

XTi is a NICE camera, lots of features for the price! From what I have read, the dynamic range and focus speed is where Canon ussually has the edge....Focus speed goes out the windo with 3rd party lenses though....

I own the 350D XT. The only SLR I've ever owned, so I can't compare it to others. But I will tell you that it does more than I expected when I bought it, and I'm completely satisfied with it. Here's some samples of a few shots I've taken.

What maters is the glass. I have shot freelance for 15 years now. I have never had someone complain about file size so anything north of 6mp is fine. Invest in fast lenses. f2.8 glass can not only get the shot others can't but where you see the diference is at the edges of the shot. And get a good flash. You will be amazed what you can do with the proper lighting.

The man speaks the truth!! Honestly I will take a fast lens over image stabilization anyday.... I use a 24-70 2.8 zoom about 80% of the time.

The other thing I have found with digi is the post processing is VERY important!!!! And I am very lacking in skills there.... But learning a lot!
It has been frustrating to say the least....shoot film for 20 years and knew how to get what I want. Digi is a different world and I had had to unteach myself a lot!

Thread resurrection...

Do you still stand by this Milner?

I'm in the market for a new/used camera, and have some experience with Nikon D40s and D60s. There is a Nikon D70 and 18-70mm 3.5-4.5G Lens & accessories on KSL for $450.

I see that as a deal.. However, I figure i'll shop around and learn what I can about other brands as well... Now that it's been 4-5 years since their release, the hindsight-20/20 thing might help my camera hunt..

I've seen what you can produce, and I trust your opinions.

Also... This sounds like a freakin nice lense, and something that I want: Nikon 16mm F/2.8D AF Fisheye Nikkor Lens

Is there a less expensive option to get a similar lens? I don't want to sacrifice too much quality, but nearing $1000 is pushing it big time on my budget..

The 20d is still a great camera but used 40D's are going pretty cheap now and it is a Great camera. I'd skip the 30D and 50D. Both are not musch of an upgrade from their prior models. With the new X series there are some great deals there too. Really comes down to what features you want/need. For me it is speed and focus along with some custom function that the X series lack.
My next body id a 5D MarKII:greg: Used 5d's are a great deal too!

Canon/nikon is still Ford/chevy. We all know where I side;)

I am not up on nikon glass, but $1000 is reasonalbe for good glass.
Fisheyes are fun, but VERY limited in use. I went with an 11-16 non fisheye that is a Tokina and test better than an Canon 10-20 and is faster and half the price. I paid $375 used and it rivals my 24-70 ($1200) in image quality.

The net is your friend. RESEARCH RESEARCH RESEARCH!!!!

I pulled the trigger on a camera system today.

I got a nearly new Nikon D70 w/ the crappy 28-80mm 3.3-5.6 that it came with, a very nice Nikkor 18-70mm 3.5-4.5 DX, and a mediocre (plastic body -made in China) Nikkor 70-300mm 4-5.6.

This setup was the back-up camera for a D300 of a general manager of some studio here in SLC.. He said they just never used it, and are now making the D300 the backup for a new D500.. or 700 or something..

I talked him down from $635 to $575. I'm pretty stoked.. I love the 18-70mm DX lens.

I have the Cannon Powershot Pro S5IS. It is not the "best" in the world, but for a beginner camera it is a really nice one.

It takes some really great photos, and does not take TOO much time to learn. It can do a lot and I really like it. The biggest problem I have with it is that you can almost never take a good, focused, photo unless the flash is open. Further often without the flash you can look through the view screen and you can see the photo perfectly. When you depress the button to snap the shot you find that the view screen gets really dark and says you have to raise the flash. This is a huge concern with digital cameras, where as the typical film camera does not try to mess with the light on you.

Anyhow, other than that it is a great camera and not too spendy either...
