Picked up a new toy

So, my dad gave me his Winchester Model 88. Seems like a good gun from what I've read. Fires a .308 round and what not. Anyone on here used one before or has one? I need to go have it cleaned up and gone through, make sure everything is still good. Where would you all take it? Needs to be sighted as well and does have a scope on it.

Looks like the scope is older one, not very exspensive from what I can tell....but, it's a Tasco 4x40.

What's ya'll got to tell?

I have the same gun in a savage, they make good guns. run a rag through the barrell and put some rounds through it. They are a great gun if you aren't shooting over 150 yds, after that they drop pretty fast. also really light, even with a hardwood stalk.

Drop pretty fast? Pretty big round. The M-16 A4 I used to fire for the gov didn't drop that fast and this is bigger.....

So, anyone know where to just have it looked over? The lever is stiff as ****!

drops 20"@300 yds 4.5@200 I've shot some hypervelocity rounds through mine and extended the range to about 400 but they lack the knockdown power at that range. (I shot at a nice 4 point this year at ~450 yds with a 180gr bullet didn't even make it, had to move up to a 300 mag wetherby to make the distanc. still missed. Great gun thought I'm a lefty so it's hard to run right handed action in a bolt action, a lever action makes that tons easier.

his parents are trying to find ways to cut him out of the inheritance. His sister is pretty excited about the situation. She's making plans for her ski house in Vail.

All bullets drop. some more, some a little less. The .308 is still the most used sniper rifle in US law enforcment and Military. ("small" calibers.) The US army rates its maximum effective range at 800 meters against a human target. A dear at 450 should be no problem. It doesnt matter what gun you shoot if YOU cant hit the target.

They are a good gun. Unless it has been seriously mistreated you don't need to have anyone look at it, just clean it with some Hoppe's #9 and have fun.

Ballistics charts need to be taken with a grain of salt... they do not have enough variables to be accurate.

Hand me YOUR .308 and I'll hit a human size target at 300+ yards with open sights on the first shot. (assuming it's anywhere near on)

it's dead on. Don't get me wrong, it's a great gun. I've used some ultralight ammo and had a grouping of 15" at 200 yds. but I don't think it has the knockdown power with light ammo. I'm sure if I had the time and a better scope It'd be even better, I've got some heavy reloads in .308 a friend of mine loaded, see how they perform.

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't shoot deer past 150 yards with most factory ammo, but with some Partitions or X bullets (165gr) I would shoot normal size deer out to 350 yards with a .308..... but all of that doesn't mean you can't hit a deer farther out than that, just that you aren't likely to get a good kill because of bullet energy/performance.
