Pie Iron talk

I didn't see a dedicated Pie Iron thread here yet, but I know there has been plenty of discussion & debate on the various materials, with each of their pros & cons... :greg:

After seeing how quick and easy they are to use and how versatile they are (thanks Kurt & Cody!), I decided to pick up a Double Pie Iron made of Cast... :p ...from Rome. I found it at Cabelas and while I've had it some time, this last weekend was our first chance to use it.

I have to say... I'm in love with the pie iron! In the past we've had a big production of preparing meals. It's fun, but time consuming and messy, not a good combo while camping. I loved the simplicity and speed of creating a meal with the pie irons. We made dinner first, just a simple Ham & Cheese sandwich. Used Spray Butter on the outside parts of the white bread, sandwich Ham and individually sliced/wrapped Swiss cheese. About 3 minutes on each side and we had perfectly grilled hot, melty sandwiches. The time thing was good because we were hungry... quick preparation means happy people. :D

The following morning we did breakfast... cooked the bacon first, then added bread, the bacon, scrambled eggs and cheese. The fire was a bit hot and the sandwiches ended up a bit burnt, but they still tasted great after a bit of scraping.

Common sense prevailed and you ended up with a Rome cast. Solid work and you won't end up with Alzheimer's :D

I love my irons, I've cooked for entire trips using nothing but the pie iron, fried egg, bacon, sauted mushrooms. One of my favorite camp lunches was along the trail. We built a tiny fire (like 1/2" twigs in a 6" circle and rocked some dinner meal prep leftovers

Because it needs to be here:

I too have a double pie iron from Rome. My favorite meal/snack to date was a spur of the moment lunch stop in the SRS overlooking somewhere above Lucky Strike IIRC...

Trip report blurb:
"We found the greatest lunch spot ever while searching for a road that skirted along the cliff sides, that was rumored to loop back up to the main road. Coolers and camp chairs are out, and Richard begins to build a small fire for some last call cooking via his trusty cast iron pie cooking device. These devices are superior to any other method of pie-cooking over an open fire; especially when compared to a cast aluminum pie cooking device (The Jacksonian Institute is currently gathering data to furthermore solidify the gross gains that cast iron pie cooking devices hold over their weak and frail counterpart - the inferior cast aluminum pie cooking device). As I dug through my cooler I found half a package of mushrooms, added that to some bacon that Kurt had left over, grabbed my double-wide cast iron pie cooking device, some spray on butter, and went to town creating bacon wrapped sautéed mushrooms over the fire using the pie iron like two separate skillets of greasy goodness.

...So are these pie irons must needed equipment for expeditioneers?

No, that would be Snow Peak cooking gear

...How do you store them after use? Seems like a mess after usage.

I simply cook it out on the fire for a few minute, let it sit for a couple of minutes and then load it up. Rome does offer storage bags if your worried about a mess. I'm considering a leather holster so I can wear it around camp and protect the finish.

I would the same as Kurt to clean them, burn off the left overs. Then I'd scrape them, pour a little water on 'em while they're still hot and the remaining food comes right off. Let them cool down, then put them in a large Ziplock bag.

When you all die, my Alzheimer-free brain will remember to place my Aluminum Pie Cooking Device on your grave to celebrate my victory. It will be the same one I currently enjoy, whereas your Iron Pie Cooking device will have long since broken into useless shards.

And yes, I too have cooked for entire trips using nothing but my trusty Pie Alume. I think I was the first to pioneer the bacon/egg/english muffin breakfast sammich that is now a staple in our group, and I've been known to buy croissants and roast beef and cook that stuff up in their too. oooh, and Cinnamon rolls are good too.

I have an aluminum omelet maker that is wonderful, serves as omelet maker and frying pan.

Where does one buy a Rome Iron Pie maker in the Utah county area?

I believe Kirkhams also has a fine selection of Pie Alume's if you're in the SL Valley.

The reason why Cody likes pie alume's is because they are not magnetic. The magnetic field of his mammoth noggin pulls in iron, so he needs to avoid pie irons for safety reasons.

Having seen a melted alum pie iron personally I will say this...

If I were to be cooking up a scrumptious, beautiful--godsend of a food such as the bacon wrapped mushrooms pictured earlier and my pie iron happened to melt into a puddle in the process I... well... I just don't know if I could handle it mentally :-\

There are 3 things in life you should never do:

1. Don't tug on Superman's cape
2. Don't overheat a 6.2L diesel engine
3. NEVER waste a perfectly good strip of bacon.

For me the alum pie irons are just not worth the risk :-\
