Hello all, my family and I will be moving to utah in august. I will be attending SLCC for a couple years then plan on U of U to finish off my degree. we are kinda looking at the west jordan area, don't want to move any further south than draper. I have visited utah a ton of times but usually i stay in draper with my brother and his family so i don't know to many areas that are good areas to live in other than his. anyways, just wondering if you guys have any areas that you recommend we try to stay away from near west valley, sandy, west jordan, taylorsville. any roads to stay north or west of.....anything like that, got two little kids, 3 and 1, with another on the way so safety is deff. the biggest thing. any help is appreciated.

Personally, I'd avoid West Valley, Kearns, and Taylorsville (isn't T-Ville just west valley any more?), what's your budget and are you buying or renting? Draper is nice, I'd also consider South Jordan (their cops are dicks though), Riverton, Herriman, Cottonwood Heights, and some parts of Sandy.

If you are going to go to school at the U then you should live near there. The commute out south eats a lot of family time and study time. The bountiful area is nice and a little closer if you don't like the downtown area.

we are going to be renting a house for at least the first year, if we like it there then we will buy a house. our budget right now will be 1400/month since that is what we are renting our house here for. deff. don't want to have a big commute and i already plan on being away from my family for longer than i want due to studying. for the first two years i will be at SLCC so i will want to rent closer to it, but if you guys don't recommend west valley city, taylorsville and kearn then i will stay away from that area. those are areas i was trying to stay away from but i hadn't heard anything about them much.
JL Rockies-where at in draper do you live? my brother lives up on fair hill ct. up on the mountain

Magna isn't too bad but I still don't like it. But the commute to the downtown area is awesome. 15-20 min.

I'll sell you my home. :p

if we were positive that we would like it, i might be interested in looking at it.....but we aren't, i think if we do buy, we will be looking at the draper area

Taylorsville, West Valley and Kearns are a good bet, especially if you need 3-4 bedrooms on a 1400/month budget. Their are alot of good neighborhoods in the area, especially Taylorsville. You will generally find alot more house for your dollar in the T-ville/West Valley/Kearns when compared to East side and South East cities. I would also check into West Jordan. Its a happy medium with alot of newer construction.

I was mostly joking. I love my home and neighborhood (except for the hoa). If I could pick up my house and move it somewhere else I would.

Best of luck!

This. He's not kidding about the commute, and it's even quicker to the SLCC campus. Any other place in the valley with comparable home prices is going to be a 1/2hour just to get to a freeway.

You can't buy my home, though.

the t-ville campus aka "redwood high" is so central that you could live just about anywhere and the commute wouldn't be terrible.

i was born and raised in t-ville, lived there for 23 years. loved it. that being said it has really gone downhill as the homes got older/cheaper (duh). just like any other city there are good parts and bad parts. i now live in west jordan and love it but just like t-ville there are good and bad parts. always look for newer construction and neighborhoods where there are signs of offroaders. that's one thing i love about my area is the abundancy of offroaders

oh and a friend of a friend called t-ville "trailers-ville" once and i almost punched him but now i think it's kinda catchy

Actually, from my house in Bountiful to the Redwood campus is only about 22 minutes, and there are some nice houses for rent up here in his price range.

Yup, West Valley and Taylorsville are the crap pot of the valley, a house equal to mine in that area would have saved me $30-40k, but I would rather feel safe and understand my neighbors when they speak.

ever been to kearns? :ugh:

west valley actually has some really nice areas that haven't been infected yet. t-ville is kinda the same deal... there are still some nice, newer areas as well. kearns on the other hand is all sketchy

that being said, t-ville is about twice the size of kearns and wvc is about 7 times larger than kearns so it's not exactly a fair fight.

those "people that don't speak english" are everywhere. you can be in the most expensive nieghborhood out there and two or three families will pitch in and buy a house. i know because they bought a house on my street for $280k. oh well, what can ya do?
