Plasti-dipping

Ever since I bought my truck I have been second guessing my decision to try out chrome wheels instead of my typical black choice.

Lately I have been kicking around the idea of buying a new set of black wheels to curb my craving. Well, during a late night YouTube binge I came across a channel that was showing "how-to's" of how to use their products. It was a sort of plastic/rubber-ish spray paint used to temporarily "paint" a car. I saw them do a couple of wheels and I was sold.

It peels off fairly easy when you are ready to back to your original color. I purchased a "kit" from dipyourcar.com. They shipped extremely fast and now it was up to me to actually take the time to prep and spray my wheels.

my test piece, you can see how it peels off.

Prep work is obviously key. I started out by cleaning my wheels at the car wash, then cleaning my wheels again once I got home, then I took the wheels off my truck and cleaned them again, lastly I used the product specific cleaner and cleaned my wheels yet again. They were a little dirty.

Once my wheels were clean I removed the center caps and found a quick fix to keep the paint off of my tires and began.

Here is the final result

I wanted to leave a little chrome to tie back into the other chrome on the truck so I peeled the dip off of the bolt heads on the lip of the wheel as well as left the caps chrome.

Here is a before pic, I tried to a good "after" pic but it was too dark. I will take one in the AM. (*updated, it is tough to see but the wheels are not black. They are a gun metal grey. I couldn't get a solid picture to show the actual color)

I am a little torn on the color, I think I like the chrome better. Who knows, maybe it will grow on me.

I doubt this would work on a dedicated trail rig as you would be ripping the color off fairly quickly. I thought this might be a good fix for all of the guys that spray paint their wheels to get black wheels or even for a guy like me who is contemplating a new wheel (color).

I will keep you posted on how well it holds up over time.

Im told that Lowes now has plasti dip but I think its just the spray cans. I want to get some lime green or red this summer and do the whole sidekick, not looking forward to ripping off my new full side body decals I just put on this week but want to try different colors.

there is a guy on ksl that does this for complete cars, or wheels, or bike frames or whatever you want. His prices are listed too. Just type in plasti dip in the search box and it is the one with a sti on the picture.

I think I got a quote of around $400-$450 on doing my sidekick when I emailed him.

$400 for a whole vehicle isn't a bad price. I think the car kit price on the website I bought mine from is like $300 or something. I would happy pay someone a benjy to do all of the work. I spent a whole day just on my wheels and although it is pretty easy there are little tricks I learned while spraying them. The last wheel I did looks far better than the first wheel.

The awesome part about plastidip is that you can do your wheels while they are on the car if you want. You don't even have to mask the tires cause it will peel off anyways. I need to do my truck wheels.

For those that don't trust it will hold-up, you can watch a YT video of a guy spraying a car with a pressure washer and it doesn't peel off. It's cool stuff. The crazy part is that it is not only a trend with cheap cars/trucks but it might be even more popular on really, really expensive cars.
