Pony Express Trail. Wendover to Lehi. Damn, that was a long day.

This was a last minute trip. My wife was dying to get out of the house.

Yesterday's trip along the Pony Express Trail in Utah. We started near Wendover Nevada and drove on dirt all the way to Lehi Utah. Probably covered close to 300 miles in the old Disco. By the end we just wanted to be done. I'll probably never go on this one again.

While there was some cool history. I was pretty disappointed that someone has stolen all the plaques off the markers. Those kinds of people should be taken out to the Salt Flats and buried naked until they melt away.

We started by going to the Town of Gold Hill Utah.

By the time this picture was taken it was getting late. It was around 4.30 pm. And since it was Valentines day, and my wife still wanted to go out that night, we had to kick it up a notch. I was flying down this road at 60 mph. Probably not the smartest thing to do, but in the Disco, it was smooth as silk.

That was one big bite to chew. Did you drive all the way to Wendover that morning as well? Its a trip we all need to experience for ourselves, but are reluctant to do again for a few years. Thanks for the pics and write up

We used about a tank of gas for the whole trip. 20 gallons. Not bad for a heavy Disco and the underpowered 4.0L V8. It actually gets decent mileage when we are driving off road. When I'm going 80+ mph it sucks it down.

Yes. We left our house at 10 am. We got back home to Layton at 7.30 pm.

Then we put the babies to bed and the older boys had dinner. We then went to dinner at an Indian Restaurant around 8.30. They lost our order in their computer system. After sitting there for 25 minutes they finally realized they lost it. We finally got our food around 9.15 and then got home around 10.00 pm. It was a long day.

A lot of cool stuff to see. Just too much to try and do in one day. I would have loved to head off on some of the side roads to see what was out there.

Yeah, that's too much driving in one day on the PET. That's a great three day trip! Bombing along the PET at 70 is fun, but there are so many places to go and explore out there off the main roads. Hope you can get back out there for a few overnighters so you can enjoy it further!

Me too. After my "expo" trailer is finished up and the key part shows up. Two day trips will be on again. Back when we only had two kids, we could sleep in the rig. but now that there are 4 of our brood running around......sleeping in a car is impossible.....and renting two hotel rooms is stupid.

60mph? Why so slow? :D

I'll second the opinion that PET is best explored as an overnighter or multiple days and with some beta about the places to see along the route.

Over Christmas I took the in-laws to see Arches, lunch at the Moab brewery, then Dead Horse Point, then back to Draper.
Not dirt roads, but some spraying slush going over soldier summit where my wiper fluid froze.
520+ miles was enough for me in one day.

The UXOC xterra group does that run every February, and yes, It's a very long day for sure.
Think we'll be staying in Wendover sat night instead of driving home from there after dinner. If not, it ends up being about a 16 hr day for me from the Ogden area.

Thinking of heading over to Elko while there, and go explore the old ghost town of Metropolis that I've read about. http://www.expeditionutah.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3577

BTW, The "do not hump" containers are the old solid rocket booster segment railroad transport containers from the space shuttle operation. See them all over in the strangest of places for storage sheds, etc.
The load/unload facility is still just west of Corinne where they transition rockets from Train to truck from ATK.
