The wife and I are going to Portland for a three day weekend. We have our flights and that's it so far I know there are some of your from the northwest on here is there any must sees? We are not afraid to drive a few hours to see the sights.

There are lots of great things around Portland. Do you want to stay in the city or see the surrounding areas?

Personally I'd drive up the Columbia river gorge and check out all the waterfalls. Multnomah falls are spectacular!

We get in Thursday am I can handle a day in the city but I don't know how much more. We want to see the surrounding areas should we head to the beach or go inland. When I was a kid we went to mt hood and I remember the drive from Portland being awesome but I was young. What about the Astoria/cannon beach area? Is it packed with tourists? We can handle tourists if it worth seeing.

I just did 2,000 miles through Oregon last month. I was surprised how empty everything was. I think with temps dropping and school in session there isn't much tourism to the Northwest right now.
Cannon beach is absolutely beautiful and well worth the drive.

Definately Columbia Gorge. Astoria/Cannon Beach is fun and so is Lincoln City. Tillamook cheesefactory and then the oyster plant just north of it.

Cannon beach is close enough to Portland you won't need to spend the night. If you drive down the 101 and make a loop then it would be worth spending a night along the way

Looks like its going to drizzle all weekend so just keep that in mind while you're thinking about what to do. My parents left this morning and are headed up that way somewhere. I don't know that I'd go as far south as Tillamook if it were me on that short of a trip. If you decide to spend the night on the coast check out Seaside for a room rather than Cannon Beach. Its just a few minutes north but is more like Heber vs. Midway or Park City (nice but more friendly on the wallet.)

Powells is a neat book shop in town. Its HUGE, if thats your (or your wifes) thing. We went like three times when I was last in Portland because my wife is nuts about books. Voodoo Donuts is a pretty touristy thing to hit as well. Being the connoisseur that I am I thought they were okay. Probably wouldn't wait in a long line for them though.

Have fun.

Oregon is great. Portland is miserable. My advice is don't even get off the freeway, not even for Powells or doughnuts. Spend all your time in the Gorge and on the coast, much more better. If you go to Multnomah Falls, don't do it on a weekend.

The Oregon coast on a misty drizzly day is magical. Get a cabin on the beach next to a coffee shop and just soak up the tranquility.

I would say the coast as well. I am not much of a city person, and not much of a Portland city person. but the coast is awesome. cannon beach, sea side, lincoln city, beverly beach, tour the cheese factory. Pretty much can't go wrong out on the coast.....Guess I am just agreeing with the others.

I'd also do the coast and Columbia river gorge first, but if you like quirky interesting downtown areas, Portland can be a pretty nice place to go out to eat, etc.

So I booked a room for Thursday in cannon beach and Saturday in Portland. We fly out at 8:50 AM so I didn't want to worry about driving back Sunday am. I'm torn about what to do about Friday night I could get another night in cannon beach or go somewhere else. Do you guys think there is enough to keep us busy in cannon beach area for a day and a half?

If your into hiking there are some cool areas you could explore Friday. If hiking isn't in the agenda then either head down the coast or inland because you can see all of the town in half an hour

Thanks for all the info! We loved cannon beach! I wish we would have stayed in that area for the whole trip. We ended up staying there one night and in Portland for two. Downtown Portland is not my cup of tea the lack of a skyline for me was depressing it seemed like everywhere I look I saw big tall trees. I felt closed in the only silver lining was the food it was top notch if your ever unfortunate enough to have to spend time there go to tasty and alders you will not be disappointed. I don't know if it's me getting older or what but every time I go to another big city I seem to appreciate Slc and maverick more and more.
