Post Toyota Bumpers

I have an 84 toy pickup that I want to fab a bumper that will support a winch. The rear has a square bumper already built, so I am planning to stick with a piece of 5" box on the front, but I can't find any pics for ideas on how to secure it to the frame.

Does anyone out there have any suggestions for design, bearing in mind that it will have to support a winch? What problems have you all run into? Pics would help.

Thanks

Here's one I did on my old truck-

I cut into the grill to make the winch sit as far back as possible. It was easy to build, I tied the bumper into the frame by replacing the stock front crossmember with some thicker square steel, then basically made a hoop around the radiator. The bumper then tied directly into the rad. hoop.

I'm going to build something similar for my project 4Runner, but w/o the stinger & light protection.

that looks great if you have access to a tube bender. why doesn't anyone make toy fronts out of box steel? All the ones I see are tube.

In most cases the bumper sits alot higher than the frame to keep the factory position and to keep the aproach angle good. on a toyota it is easy to start with a hoop that comes up from the front spring mounts and put the cross section in at the height just below the grill. that hole bumper will weigh less than just the 5" square tude with out any mounting brachets

Make friends with someone who has a bender! :D

IMO, round tube is a lot easier to work with, it's hard to get the aesthetically pleasing angles with square tube. Be the first to build one from square that looks good!

Yeah, I've been looking in the personal
ads for someone who loves long walks on
the beach and romantic evenings bending
steel in her garage.

I found this one on pirate and I see what
you mean about the lines looking better with
tube.

Here's the one I just built for my 4Runner. It's 4x2 tube with 2"x2"x1/4" brackets. I also ran a tube from the back of the bumper under each headlight back to my shock hoops. It is rock-solid. I'll try to take a better pic of it tonight without the winch in the receiver.

That looks great, do you have any larger pics or from different angles?

If i remember correctly, isn't this the bumper that came with a free truck awhile back?

Yeah, I was trying to sell the chassis & had a few offers on the bumper. As you can now see, it's not really a 'bolt-on' item.
