Power steering cooler placement?

I'm going to put a Detroit Locker in the front of my 92 Cummins. I don't plan on having more than a 2.5" lift so I am basically stuck with the stock "push-pull" steering which is overwhelmed as it is. These trucks do not come with power steering coolers, but I have a big one that I would really like to install that would hopefully help the situation a little.

The problem I see it that my reservoir (spelling ) is mouted very low on the engine, and the only good spot I can find for the cooler is half way up on the radiator towards the top. So the cooler would be about 2-3 inches higher that the cap on the reservoir. If I fill the reservoir there is no way that it will fill the cooler with fluid so I will basically run the pump dry if I start the engine if that makes sense? I have looked for a lower spot to mount the cooler, but unless I put it right behind the bumper I have no other options :-\

Any ideas? If I keep adding fluid won't it all drain back to the pump and overfill it when the engine is off? I've looked at everything in the drive way, and all the factory coolers are mounted below the pump :-\ Thanks again,

Andrew

I would search for an alternative solution, another pump, a higher reservoir, something else. :D Use a plate-style cooler , or one of those finned tube-style deals, and mount it lower.
There must be a way! There muuuuusssst!!! :D

I had a CJ that I ran it to the firewall below the battery on the passenger side. I then put a small fan that was controlled with a thermostat. I used a flat cooler then spaced it about an inch of the firewall so that air would circulate. Worked like a champ. I'm going to do a similar set up on the 4 runner soon.

On my buggy, the cooler is above the pump, then again so is the oribital valve. Pretty much, the pump and resivoir (SP) are the lowest part of the steering system. Works great for me.

Thanks everyone!

It can't drain back through the pump, as it's a pressurized feed line. I'll start a thread shortly on my steering cooler to show you.

There is a high pressure line, and a low pressure return line. I don't think I've heard of anyone running a cooler on the pressure side before  am I confused? I'll keep an eye out for your pics.

Sounds good to me  I'll try it and see what happens.

Maybe I'm up in the night, but putting fluid in the reservoir is not going to fill a cooler that is mounted up high. You would have to run the engine to pump it up there, but then in return it would run the reservoir dry... Right?
