Pre Paint Cleaner

What is the best stuff to use without going to an auto body paint store? Can I just use Acitone or Mineral Spirits?

At school I think we just used acetone...

Acetone or laquer thinner, mineral spirits leaves kind of an oily residue.

I have always been told to clean the body prior to painting. This removes oils left from things like fingers and what not... What do you use to wipe it down with before you paint?

I use just cheap clean up thinner from the body supply shop. Use a damp, not wet towel. What you should be more concerned with is silicone (armorall) on the surface. Soap, water, and scrubbing your nutz off is the only way to get that crap off, and you wont know it's there till you shoot the first coat.

Test a spot with the thinner. Depending on what's on it now, it could soften and wrinkle the finish. Then, you get to start all over.

SILICONE is EVIL ([moma from Waterboy] it's the debil [/moma from Waterboy]). Seriously, you want to snag some wax and grease remover. It's cheap and has MANY uses (nothing better for getting grease or tar off your car).

He's not gonna dump it on there and let it sit and strip it...just put it on a rag and wipe it...it may take off a little finish, but that should help it get to 'cleaner' ,'fresher' paint and help it bond better. Sorry for the cave man lingo, but I'm not a paint guy...and that just makes sense to me. Let me know if I am off base. Paint that has not been exposed is less likely to be full of dirt and crap and should bond better...?

I need to wipe it down with something to clean the surface prior to painting. I was hopping to just use some general product that I could get at Home Depot... but I guess I'll just go down to the paint house and pick up some good stuff.

I 'think' I've seen it at Autozone, but I know I've seen it at Napa.

I would just use acetone myself...you can only get it so clean, and that is what I would buy... If it's down to metal, then you won't hurt the finish... and acetone will clean it, period. Do what you gotta do shawn...but you can only get it so clean, so I wouldn't spend the money on something expensive. BTW, on a side note, I had to type in your name like 4 times...lol

I dont know if it affects paint but I know at my work we use acetone to clean certain parts of our presses and if you dont clean it really good with a fresh unused rag the acetone will leave a residue.

That can be true...what we did, is wipe it down with the crappy 'hard' paper towel you find in most bathrooms...it left no lint, but you could wipe it and if it leaves lint, just dust it before you do anything, with a clean lint free rag of course...and as far as the pain, as far as I know, it can strip it, but it won't strip it all at once, and that isn't an issue in this case...

Wax and grease remove is all of a couple of dollars more than acetone.

Everyone always wants to skimp when it comes to paint then they complain about the results when something goes wrong.

Excuuuse me... Like I know how much more it is, like I said in the above post, I'm no body guy, just going on past experience...and if it's that much better please explain why... Won't paint thinner remove wax and grease too??? And if you sand it, there shouldn't be wax or grease on it anyways...???

No, paint thinner will not remove all of the contamination. You should clean before you sand as well. If you don't then you are just grinding any contamination into the surface.

There are actually cleaners for pre prep and for pre paint and they are not the same.

This stuff is available at Mountain West Paint. I think it was $11 for a quart.
It works great for me.
