Marriage and Civil Union are just terms with similar definitions. One is more or less a legal contract. Personally I agree with Brett, Cody and Milner on this one.

A few things I have observed with this whole issue.

1. Gay people aren't going anywhere. They are here to stay. Deal with it.
When you read one of those signs on TV during a gay pride rally that says, "We're here and we're queer!" know that they mean it.

2. Gay people do not want to be tolerated. Tolerating something is acknowledging that it exists and despite the fact that you don't like it, you allow it to continue. For example, when you tolerate a crying baby in the movie theater you acknowledge it exists and despite disagreeing with it you allow it to continue. Gay people want to be accepted and embraced. It is an altogether unreasonable request given the belief structure of our country but they will push the issue of acceptance by force, i.e. the legal system. The issue of civil unions is a tolerance maneuver, we tolerate their existence, grant them rights, but do not accept them as equals by allowing them to use the same word from a legal aspect. It is silly to press the issue of being able to use the term "marriage" on a piece of paper with rights between civil unions and marriage being basically identical but THEY WANT TO BE ACCEPTED BY YOU.

3. The government has no business being in the marriage business. All governments be they local, state, or federal should cease issuing marriage licenses. Marriage, from a governmental standpoint, is a contractual agreement between two people that grants a few exclusive rights and institutes penalties for failure to execute said contract. Marriage from a governmental standpoint is a simple contract...government doesn't care about love or two people growing closer together by pledging their eternal souls to god. The government, as the law is written, cares about the contract. Marriage should be a private and philosophical(religious) gesture between two people. The legal union should be completely seperate and in no way called marriage. If you want to get married you should do it completely separate from the government. If you want to bind your mate with a legally binding contract then go talk to a lawyer and have him draw one up. Leave the government out of the process. I suppose you can already do all that but the government has no business dictating what marriage is and whom can do it.

4. I don't give a damn about who wants to enter into a legally binding contract with someone else. If you want to marry your tree in the front yard and bequeath all of your worldly posessions to it after you die then so be it. If you want to marry your quarter-horse and do the same, I don't care. I am a person of mild tolerance, though I do not agree with it personally I have no business stopping you from it. What you choose to contractually bind yourself to has no bearing or interest to me just don't expect me to accept you as an equal. I will tolerate you as long as you tolerate me.

My neighbors tolerate me roaring into the neighborhood on the motorcycle at 4am on a weekday just like I tolerate their ridiculous desire to mow the lawn at noon when I am trying to get some sleep. They do not accept me nor do I accept them...we quietly tolerate each other and MIND OUR OWN BUSINESS which I would invite all of you who hate gay people. Tolerate them and MIND YOUR OWN DAMN BUSINESS. :greg:

Jenn and I were in SF during this and were  when we heard the news. Not going to get into the politics of this one as you can probably already guess where we stand on these things.

There were also no big gay riots in the castro.

On a side note, chit chat has been relatively slow lately and then all the sudden there's a 5 page thread discussing homosexuality:p

This is pretty much what I was trying to say but I'm not very good at explaining stuff the way I see it in my mind. Thank you!

I appreciate this post. Great points that I agree with. The tolerance thing is what I couldn't get accross. You put it very well. It's something I can and wil tolerate but won't embrace or accept as normal. Anywhay I am curious to see how the constitutionalilty of it plays out in court.
