Propane Conversion

I have been debating on getting rid of those nasty carbs and converting to the world of propane. My only hang up is storage and tanks? Anyone have any experance? Can you have one custom made? I want to be able to store as much as I can being that it isn't as easy to get as petro.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

I run my sami and propane, but use the forklift tanks, its much easier for me plus no road tax. I know you can get much larger tanks 50 gal plus and have even seen some at some pick and pull junk yards before.

I'm not sure where in Utah you are. But when I was running my toy on propane, I went to Freeway Propane in Springville. He has a whole field full of old tanks in all sizes. He sold me a 16 gallon tank real cheap. They all came off trucks that used to run on propane.

Thanks for the replies. I will have to look up Freeway Propane. Because propane has limited availability I want to get the largest tank possible. Ideally I would like a tank to be 10"x 26"x 5'. Not sure if that is possible though....That is just the area that would be perfect for a tank that is out of the way on the truck.

Is there a reason all propane tanks are round? If that is a requirement I might look into getting multiple small tanks and plumb them into series...

Another question is what is the conversion of propane to gas? How much gas can a 40 pound tank hold?

Why not run dual fuel?

That is a good idea but the system that I am looking at right now replaces the carbs with a new manifold. Its worth looking into.

I called a propane place today and got some answers. Just for your info - a propane tank can not be square becasue a square can not hold pressure like a cylinder...makes scence.

And all tanks have to be verticle except for forklift tanks or ones that are designed to do so.

Im still going to do it, I just am going to have to revamp my design...

Not sure what you mean there. Most are going to be horizontal.
Have you tried www.Propaneguy.com for your kit?

I was just told that most tanks are ment to be verticle, like a normal grill tank that everyone has. If you want to lay them down they have to be designed for that, ie forklift tank.

I am using a guy in Canada who has done a lot of conversions for Unimogs and has a system for the Pinzgauer. That site seems to have a lot of cool accessories though.
