Purpose of a stinger

Two reasons I can think of
#1 a stinger that is taller than the hood will usually save the hood/radiator in the event of a roll. You will still probably loose the windsheild frame but at least you can drive it out.

#2 it can act as a "wheely bar" to stop a rig from going over, either front or back.

can anyone think of anything else?

I thought of these purposes also. I also thought it could be used as a ramp to help you get started up a wall???

I hate stingers... there is a big difference between a radiator hoop and an obnoxious stinger that only prevents you from getting up things you normally would have been able to (like when a stinger pile drives the face of a rock like dump bump ;))

I can't stand the fad... You see a TJ on 33's, no lockers, weak suspension and sporting a 3' stinger... like hell the guy is going to get in a situation to use it?

I watched plenty of rigs navigate the gnarliest terrain out there, and driven some of it myself... I still can't see a use for an obnoxious stinger...

I think the only real purpose is to look stupid. Anyone that has gone over forwards can attest that they wouldn't do anything for you.

Did I mention they look rediculous?

Lol, that is the god father of all stingers, you have been STUNG.....but if it helps you in anyway then good for you, and can't say i've ever seen one in use, but it does make sense for a wheelie or frontend bar.

The only real application I have seen them in use was in rock crawling compititions. It gives the spotter a bit of leverage when they need to pull the front end around with a strap. Once saw an show on PBS about an expedition in the Arctic or was it the Antartic where the stingers kept the rig's front ends from falling too deep into the snow and ice when they hit a hole. Other than that, I agree with others, they look rediculous and for the most of them out there on peep's rig they are for looks.

The original reason for them was to catch your vehicle and keep it from falling into a crevass in the ice. Only useful in places like Greenland & far north Canada where you might be driving across a glacier and actually have the possibility of falling into a hidden crevass. I have no clue why anyone would want one just for looks, and I can't think of any functional reason to have one in this part of the world.
