push button start thingy

okay so my 88 manche doesn't like to start and i think it is the solenoid. so connecting the solenoid and the starter with a screwdriver or push starting it works, but...
can i just connect a wire between the solenoid and the starter and have it work? I SUCK AT WIRING so if that is a dumb question i am sorry. i have looked into kits for push buttons but they look too pricey for this crappy project.

well i was wondering if it would make the starter turn over the whole time the ignition is on or just while it is turned to the start position? whats the point of the solenoid in the first place? like i said i suck at wiring

Well, you need two switches. One to provide power for accessories, etc. This one would need to stay on when switched to "On". Then you'd need a switch (or button) that is just a momentary on, so when you push it (or flip it to "On") it only engages the solenoid when you are holding it down, then as asoon as you let it go it will disengage the solenoid.

The solenoid is just that...a switch. The reason it is there is to be able to run the very large gague wire needed for the starter from the battery to the starter (short distance, not thru the cab) instead of from the battery to the ignition switch and then back out to the starter (long distance, could catch fire in the cab). Also, you would need a switch rated for VERY high amps and it would cost about as much as the solenoid. The best bet is to just replace the solenoid. (or if you know someone who is handy they could probably take it abart and either clean the contacts or fix whatever was wrong-but it would have to be a friend who would do it for free 'cause paying someone to do this would cost more than the solenoid)

Yes. That's what I did on my scout. This pic is exactly the way I did mine and no problems since. The brown wire is what supplies the 12 volts to activate the solenoid (switch) to let the 12v go through it to the starter. It was taken from the original solenoid on the starter. You either have a bad solenoid, ignition switch (at start position), wiring from ignition or neutral safety switch. I would just wire in a new wire that has power only in the run position and put in a push button then run the other wire to the S on the new 70's Ford solenoid.
