Puter Geeks...RAM ?

Ok so this is my first build and I don't know crap about computers.

My question is who do you all recommend for RAM?

I have and ASUS P5B Deluxe (Wifi Edition) it supports up to 8 Gig with 4 slots.

I think (2x1GB) RAM would work fine for now?

What Brand? From what I have read Corsair, Kingston and Crucial are top choices? Also I read decent reviews for a newer brand (Patriot?).

I will be running a Intel Core 2 Duo e6700 as well.

your machine will be faster if you don't use all 4 slots. If you are gaming, 2gig is perfect, get 2 1 gig sticks. 2 512 meg sticks are faster still, but only 1 gig, which is plenty for most stuff, but 2 gig preferred for heavy gaming.

Kingston is actually the cheap stuff. Corsair and Crucial are used by Over-Clockers, OCZ is the best

For the newer intels, you want the ddr2 ram ... very high speed front side bus

Look up the specs on the e6700, I'm not familar with it, find it's FSB (front side bus speed's max) then get the matching ram (i.e. ddr2 DDR2 PC2-8000 • 5-5-5-15 ). Do some web searches on Computer Overclocking and see what people are using. I build and OC AMD's so not familar with intel as much

p.s. Newegg is very good price wise, return wise, fast/cheap ship wise etc. highly suggest newegg.

Also, buy a paired set .. they test them together ... Make sure your e6700 is ddr2, which I'm 95% sure it is ... then try these out .... I've used OCZ for a long time ... top of the line stuff

OCZ 2 gig gaming

You need to read in the Motherboard book about what type of memory is required. as far as brands go, any name brand works fine, the memory must meet a performance spec and mtbf.

My recommendation is to go with as low a frequency memory that still supports your memory requirements, it makes for a more stable system. You will lose some performance, but not enough that you'll notice.

266 FSB with a 1:2 FSB to RAM ratio = 533Mhz for RAM frequency, assuming you will not OC I would look for PC4200. 2 x 512 is usually enough, unless you are gaming or rendering/encoding video. Any of the brands you listed would be fine, if you want to try and OC the RAM, go here and see what people are using

umm, your talking ddr timings here, that intel is going to want ddr2 ... I'm pretty sure ... ddr2 is a much faster FSB

By no means certain, but I believe DDR2 PC2 4200 still equals 533Mhz... If you are running in asynch with a 1:2 multiplier and a 266 Mhz FSB you need 533 Mhz on your RAM??

What am I missing?

OK so one of us is way off... could be me, but the listed FSB is quad pumped, no? The actual FSB is 1066Mhz/4= 266Mhz.

I am running the Intel D 805 2.66Ghz CPU. The listed FSB is 533Mhz. 533Mhz/4= 1.33FSB. I am positive that this is the working FSB on this chip. CPUz and Bios verified. The 805 is 133Mhz x 20 (cpu multiplier)= the rated 2.66Ghz

I also have a 3Ghz prescott that is listed at 800 FSB, once again quad pumped from 200 FSB

I don't have an E6700 but I would bet that it is running a 266Mhz FSB with a 10x multiplier to get to 2.6Ghz

Like I said Maybe I am way off...but I don't think so. ;)

People often buy faster RAM than they can use, in part b/c this can be confusing, in part cause faster must be better right??

if you use DDR2-667 on a rig with 266Mhz FSB The RAM will constantly be "waiting" for the FSB to catch up. IIRC It can actually run slower than if you had the FSB and the RAM matched.

well, I might be me off ... I OC AMD's and so not familar with Intel ... especially DDR2 memory ... I know I'm running DDR PC-3200 on my 1.6g Opteron's oc'ed to 2.7g - memory at about ddr oc'ed to about 610

I'm just surprised the intel's are talking ddr533 speeds on ddr2, I thought it was suppose to be much faster?

DDR2 is a little faster frequency, and quite a bit faster data rate...

I have my intel 805 2.6Ghz Oc'ed to 3.5Ghz double prime stable as of last night. :D

Yeah I don't plan on doing any overclocking as of right now.
The mobo is DDR2 standard DDR2 800 with 4 x 240 pin slots.

here's my DIY water cooler ... I'm running my dual opty "naked" (i.e. cover removed)

Also I have NOT purchased the E6700 yet so if you think I should get something different let me know.

heck, go AMD, for sure - the amd dual cores kick intels dual cores butt ... a much better architecture ... faster and cheaper ... and OC much better

what are you doing with the PC? Basic, gaming, file server, video encoding?? What you need depends on what you want it to do.
