Questions about air bags and hitches.

Has anyone installed air bags on the rear of their rig that was also using a B&W turnover ball? Does anyone have any pictures of this?

Thanks for the help.

Sorry for the delay everyone... it has been a little bit of a hectic time around here with my divorce going on and the associated hassle. :(

But I finally was able to root around through my old files and find my build pictures from when I installed my airbags under my '01 Ram 2500 diesel that I had already installed a B&W Turnover ball in. I will start off with the pictures for you of the install.

Here you can see the issue you run into when installing the airbags with the Turnover ball. The plates on the outside of the frame rails from the ball mount are 1/4" plate so they push the upper mount out from where it is designed to be by that 1/4". So I came up with the solution that i would not be removing the turnover ball and it would in-fact make it stronger if I went ahead and welded it all together to the frame rail. So I made templates that would fit under the upper bucket for the airbag and mate everything together nicely. I then cut out some 1/4" plates and welded everything up.

The kit for the airbags comes some adjustability built into it, but still not quite enough to line up the bag perfectly straight for the 1/4" difference and keep the bag lined up squarely on the leaf spring. So I hooked it all up and sent a picture into Ride Rite manufacturers and asked them if it would effect the load capacity to have a slight bend in the bag. I was happy to find out that it would not negatively effect the bag's capacity at all!

I have since loaded 2 one ton pallets in the back of my 3/4 ton truck with only minimal squatting. Before the airbags I would hook my empty 25' H&H Gooseneck to the truck and it would squat the back end approximately 2"; now I can hook up the same trailer loaded with my 5750 lb RamCrawler on it with 20 lbs of air in the bags and it might drop half an inch!! Love the bags!!!

Hope this information helps you all out a little!

I missed this thread before.

You can also use a spacer plate on the lower holes, and drill the rest through the hitch and the frame.

Basically a normal install with some 1/4" spacers.

If you are worried about the bags, and have the tire clearance. You can extend the lower bag mounting holes by 1/4"

There you go... I fogot to say that part! Meant to add that you don't have to weld on the brackets, you could do the same install by just drilling through everything and bolting the buckets on to the frame. Thanks!
Also.. the pictures are a bit deceiving... there really is about 7" of space between my tires and the bags, especially with my new tires and wheels on there. And I did oval out the holes in towards the frame a little when I installed the bags to try to compensate for the 1/4" plate.
This is just a crappy cell phone picture... but this was taken today.

What year Dodge? My Firestone bags were complete bolt on. Took less than 30 minutes to install, and about 30 Minutes to run the airlines. This was on an 03 with a B&W turnover already installed.

When I put bags on my Ford, I had to notch the brackets to fit together so that they slide together. The kit said it was a bolt on. It only took a minute to see why it didn’t fit right and what was needed. I loved the bags with my 10K lbs bumper pull camp trailer and the 14K lbs of hay on a goose. I need to get some bags for my 07 Dodge. A couple friends have had bolt on kits that had no problems just bolting them on, 06 Dodge and 03 Chev.

LT's truck is an '06 Ram 3500 with a 6" lift (IIRC) 35" BFG ATs, Tuning out the wazoo, Straight Dual exhaust, and much much more!!! Oh yeah, and it is only pulling about 650 hp and around 1250 ft/lb on a 6 speed manual with an aftermarket clutch!!! The truck is a BEAST!!! Basically it is my wet dream waiting to happen!

Should be a total bolt on job then. I don't know about the lift portion though. Mine just has a level kit, so it is stock in the rear.

Well, not quite that much hp and tq. I had it on a dyno on May 16th and i was able to throw 542.7 hp and 1118.4 tq to the rear tires. Everything else is right.

My concerns were the extra width that the tops of the air bags would be spaced out due to the B&W turnover ball hitch. I would rather have the bags mounted so that they are as straight as possible. I really did not think about opening up the holes on the leaf spring side to allow for the bottoms of the brackets to be moved out bound as well. I am not really sure if I will be able to get away with that or not, as it is already really close to the inside rear dual.
