Ram Assist Question

I am about to put on my new ram assist I purchased from RL. Thanks

and I was wondering is it better to use the ram as the hard stop or the factory hard stops on the knuckles? Will this cause a problem if I use the knuckle stops? Or is it better to bottom out the ram at the same time as the the steering stops.

any thoughts?
thanks

Is your ram the exact lenght to equal the distance traveled between the stops? I would imagine that there will be a difference between the two- being the knuckle stops and the ram stop.

I have not set up a ram assist, but I am just kind of thinking you should make the right and left turn as equal as possible, and which ever one hits first wins.

Good luck, maybe you can set one up for me soon too! I've been needing some assistance in the steering department :greg:

The Ram should always be the stop! Set the system up (weld the brackets on) with the steering turned to the stop on the side with the ram collapsed so that the ram and the knuckle stop bottom at the same time. On the side that the ram is exteded you need to get a bushing(rocklogic has them) that you will put inside your ram so that the ram stops when or before you hit the knuckle stops.

cool thanks for the insight. I have an 8" ram but where I'm going to mount it is about 7.5 to 7.75. so I'll need to get a bushing.

If I used the stop on the knuckle, what is the effect? extra wear or broken ball joints?

thanks

I measured my travel full lock to full lock on the stock bump stops, then had RL make the ram have the exact same travel :)

Thanks for all the comments.
I talked to RL today and I'll be going to get the bushing to make it close to the same travel. Ideal would be to have the ram stroke the sam as the stops. If not the same then slightly shorter so you are using the ram as a stop.
